Shuangshi Wei et al. Int Immunopharmacol.2021 Jan.
Abstract

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still spreading worldwide, and there is an urgent need to effectively prevent and control this pandemic. This study evaluated the potential efficacy of Egg Yolk Antibodies (IgY) as a neutralizing agent against the SARS-CoV-2. We investigated the neutralizing effect of anti-spike-S1 IgYs on the SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus, as well as its inhibitory effect on the binding of the coronavirus spike protein mutants to human ACE2. Our results show that the anti-Spike-S1 IgYs showed significant neutralizing potency against SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus, various spike protein mutants, and even SARS-CoV in vitro. It might be a feasible tool for the prevention and control of ongoing COVID-19.

I have seen this paper cited to suggest that the current egg shortage is the result of a deliberate plot to deprive the public of a cheap weapon against covid. Some people seem to think that simply consuming eggs will combat the disease. If you see this sort of thing, straighten people out with a few facts:

The published paper is about antibodies in eggs that were laid by hens that had been injected with spike to evoke an immune response. Untreated normal chickens to not have any protein that binds spike or inhibits SARS-CoV-2.

The authors propose that one potential use for the chicken antibodies from egg yolks is for passive immunity. That is, the isolated antibodies could be used in much the same way that convolescent serum or certain monoclonal antibodies have been used. They point out that IgY antibodies have also been applied to combat human viral infections including RSV, influenza Coxsackie virus and SARS. They also propose that “The use of IgYs in aerosol or spray formulations on the respiratory tract, the oral cavity, and even the digestive tract may be a worthwhile strategy. It might prevent the invasion of the SARS-CoV-2 virus through the natural infection route.”

These are interesting ideas that should have been followed up on. The paper was published online 2020 Nov 3.
