Hello, all! I joined this forum for help with this topic as my Google searches led me here. I am in my late 30's and have stuttered probably my whole life. I have tried speech therapy, neuro feedback, neuro lens, TMS, medication, supplementation, hypnosis, and speech therapy. Nothing seems to work. I have also gotten my tonsils out and that didn't help that much either.  The only prescription drug that seems to somewhat work is Abilify, although I'm not a big fan of the side effects. I'm looking for help and direction. I've tried Piracetam and didn't really like that and it seems to be giving me headaches. I would love to find something nootropic that I could try that would help with my fluency.  My current regimen consists of L-Tyrosine, choline, B1, and DLPA. Could anyone point me in the direction of something to add? Possibly a nootropic? Amino acid? Medication? I'm open to any and all suggestions especially from people who have battled and overcome stuttering.

Thanks!

Hello,

Have you practiced stuttering?

https://themeaningse...ntention-cases/

There was a lovely story from Frankl, of a man who stammered chronically throughout his life - when asked if he had not done so. Once, was the reply, as a boy he hooked a ride on a bus without paying. As the conductor came round he thought 'I know he'll take pity on this poor boy with a stammer'. He spoke perfectly.

In case you haven't seen this article (on various sites), I wanted to share it here.  It may be worth researching some of the alternatives and discussing with your doc.

If the stuttering is partly related to social anxiety, perhaps exposure therapy could have some value.

" I'm open to any and all suggestions especially from people who have battled and overcome stuttering. "

I have stuttered all my life and like you tried everything including various pharmacological interventions. It's my opinion that stuttering is a physical defect in the part of our bodies where speech is produced. While certain pharmacological substances can modulate the severity either positively or negatively in my experience nothing works for long term success. Speech therapy clinics, which in my opinion are often cult-like,  teach stutterers tricks to work around their stutter. Depending on the severity of the stuttering the tricks may work for a time but it my experience the benefits go away with time. Anti-schizophrenic medications and similar things are said to help fluency but have tons of horrible side effects. At the end of day acceptance is the best route and also maintaining a positive outlook  and positive mental health. Having said that, there are supplements I take that I feel benefit my mental health and by doing so may have slight benefits to my stuttering. These are  Ashwagandha, Lithium orotate, probiotics, fish oil and other supplements.

Have you tried Lee Lovett's method?

No, I am not familiar with it. But have tried all sorts of different techniques and as a teen my parents took me to several clinics focused on techniques for breathing and stretching out syllables and things like that. Some worked for a time but I felt my stuttering adapted to the techniques so I would use them and they no longer worked.  I also was in a trial for Pagoclone which decreased my stutter initially but then stopped working. At this point in my (mid 50s) life I have given up on treatments and just try to live my life as best I can.
