This is a technique I just learned about and tried and it seems to work. People from time to time may have intrusive thoughts after trauma and not be able to stop thinking about the traumatic events. Even little things like an argument, insult or small loss may create thought patterns in which the person keeps brewing over it all day and then can't seem to move on and let it go even when they try. Repetitive thoughts or constant rumination over the days events can cause insomnia
Its very simple, you take a word, any word and with the first letter of that word you think of all the words you know that start with the letter. When you can't think of any more words, you go to the next letter in your word and do the same thing and so on. Lets take an example:
Lets say you pick the word "broad" or could be any word. It starts with B so you might write:
bunny
bush
before
barracks
bear
bone, etc etc
Maybe you can think of 20 or 30, you get tired and can't think of any more and the next letter is R so there is road, running remember, etc and so on. You may not get to the end if you start with a long word because it takes mental effort.
I think the reason it works is that it forces you to consider dozens of different words and their associated concepts, the denotation and connotation. For example the word "dog" you may like dogs and have a positive connotation. "tree" is more neutral but makes you think of the concept of a tree. By going through all those associations, you break the thought patterns you were in that lead you to keep going back to the event or whatever that you wanted to move on from.
You will find that the intrusive or repetitive thoughts are greatly reduced or stop completely. You can always do it again later if need be.
