I charted US cancer death rates by site from 1930 to today and looked at what actually moved each line.

  • Cancer deaths are down a third since 1991, but the decline is three separate stories, not one.
  • Stomach cancer was the top killer in 1930 and is now fifteenth. Refrigeration and clean water did it, not medicine.
  • Lung cancer tracks the cigarette rolling machine and free WWI rations up, and the Surgeon General's warning down, with a 26-year lag.
  • Colorectal deaths started falling the moment stool-test screening guidelines appeared in 1980. Breast self-exams, PSA and mole checks never showed the same effect and were rolled back.
  • Pesticide use rose ten-fold with no visible trace in the national trend.
  • Pancreatic cancer is flat for a century, and 2026 finally brought a RAS-targeting drug and the first successful Phase 3 cancer vaccine.
