Well, the brain does play a significant role too, but that's pretty well bloody obvious.

As an aside, I think high deductible health insurance is something everyone should have. The premiums aren't that bad with a big deductible and the hospitals and doctors will accept it. If some major catastrophe happens, you are covered. They will send you a bill for the deductible and you can make monthly payments.

Do we have consciousness without a body? I think so but without a brain we can't think.

I think what I spend is well worth it but I try to save money. I get a small dose vs huge dose when I have a choice. I buy in bulk and cap up when I can. That alone saves me hundreds of dollars a year. Is Duke the big spender at 4 to 5k a year?

4-5K is what it would cost for his basic list, so his full list would cost quite a bit more.

Ha ha ha. I wish it was that little! About 20 of the pills I take are around $1 a day. My guess is that I spend $20,000 a year on supps alone. I also buy my parents a lot -- another $10,000 a year.

Whoa :-) must have made a bundle from poor blokes like me who bought your games :-). Well, i shore hope it "pays" and really does help you. I really reevaluate my supps every once in a while and kick out stuff i don't want to stick with so i can keep below a somewhat reasonable 1k us$ :-) and even that seems totaly off the whack to everyone who knows my inclination to down pills :-).

I do this all the time. I have dropped more supplements than I can remember. Plus, many I only take every other day, or every third day.

- B-complex (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, biotine, folic acid, choline, inositol and PABA).
- vitamin E (d-alpha-tocoferol)
- provitamin A (beta-caroteen)
- EPA/DHA
- Zinc
- Magnesium
- Calcium + vitamin D
- Lecihine
- vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

I also take: extra calcium (powder), garlic, digest enzyme, lineseed oil (ALA) and probiotics (lactococcus lactis, lactobacillus casei, lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium bifidum).

It may be a good idea to think about DMAE if you are taking Carnosine. There is some evidence that lipofusin may be a byproduct of AGE crosslink breaking. There is growing evidence that carnosine not only prevents AGEs, but may also break the crosslinks to some degree.

Sounds good Duke. But how do you determine whether a supplement is helping you or not? How do you know what "works"?

Isn't there a risk of copper toxicity from ALA. It's supposed to significantly reduce copper excretion from bile. 
   


Do you have any references to studies showing that? Hmm if it's true then increased copper is a problem.

hey guys, long time lurker here. i see blueberries (and berries in general) mentioned quite a bit in this thread. i did a forum search and found out they're a good source of pterostilbene, a compound similar to resveratrol. i can't find pterostilbene being sold as a supplement anywhere. i'm already adding blueberries and strawberries to my morning protein (whey) shake. are the extracts you guys buy made out from the seeds, leaves, or the skin of berries? do any of them list how much pterostilbene is in each dosage?

tintinet, you mention metformin. Are you taking it and what effects have you noticed? What can you tell us about it? How would you compare it to, benfotiamine, for example?

Been taking a few years. Started out a 250 mg once a day. Noticed pretty marked appetite suppression, even at that low dose. Gradually the appetite suppression eased and I slowly increased the dose to 500 mg TID.

Other than appetite suppression, I don't notice much. My fasting glucose had always been low, anyway. For a time I spot checked my blood glucose via finger stick monitor, but I found it pretty boring as there was little variation, and I haven't done it in quite a while.

-Grape Seed Extract/Grape Skin Extract/Red Wine Extract
-Blueberry Extract
-Pomegranate Extract
-Vitamin D
-Curcumin
-Cinnamon ( eat - add to oatmeal and applesauce daily)
-Olive Oil (tbls daily)
-Lutein


I would list fish oil and EFA's but they give me horrible break outs. I stay away from them and focus on getting more olive oil from my diet.

The olive oil, curcumin (turmeric), green tea, cinnamon, and wine related extracts (grape seed, skin and red wine extract) are what I consider "tried and true". These are very safe substances that have been used daily by many cultures for 100's if not 1000's of years and have scientific studies to back them up.

I believe that vitamins and minerals should come from a solid whole foods diet. I included Vitamin D in the list since it's actually a hormone - that is not manufactured by the body (unless exposed to sun) and next to impossible to get an adaquate amount (atleast 3000iu daily) from foods.

Just my 2 cents.

Vitamin D, along with resveratrol, appears to be the new "wonder drug" of the moment, at least, and perhaps for the long run.

Olive oil is cool, but I don't go too heavy on it, and get some, in moderation, along with avocados, fish oils, other oils naturally present in plants, predominantly. But I view OO as a nutritious "food" or food component rather than added supplement. Same for whole blueberries, other fruit including pomegranate, kiwi, citrus, tomato, spinach (thus including lutein, lycopene) perhaps in a better absorbed and physiologically effective form.

May i ask why magnesium? isnt it fairly abundant in food? or is there extra benefits of high doses?

Magnesium is super-important for heart health....

Most people are deficient... Especially in an age of RO bottled water...

Thanks Health Nutty for putting in the Rhodiola -- anyone who's read Dr. Mahtab Jafari's work (from UC Irvine) on Rhodiola will know why! I would have my Verde Botanica in my top 5. Also, nice to see that "extra Magnesium" gets a lot of votes. Does anyone here use the powdered Mag supplement CALM which makes a great cup of hot beverage? I love CALM and couldn't make it through the week without it.

Does anyone here use the powdered Mag supplement CALM which makes a great cup of hot beverage? I love CALM and couldn't make it through the week without it.

I assume that is Peter Gillham’s Natural Calm? Calm failed Consumer Lab's testing for lead.
