There are many "anti-aging" supplements, but which supplements are essential. I am referring to those supplements which we can be relatively certain will enhance rather than diminish longevity. Do any exist? For example, green tea has many benefits, with some scientific support, but overall, how certain are we that green tea will have a net beneficial effect on health and longevity. Are there any essential anti-aging supplements and upon what studies are they supplements supported?

Enzymes.
Enzymes levels seem to decline with age. There isn't much that happens in the body WITHOUT an enzyme being involved.
Nutritional supplements are more about specific health problems of the individual. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to nutritional suppelments. Some people may need more vitamin C while others may need more of the b vitamins.
But after a certain age everyone can benefit from enzymes.
"Not just for digestion anymore." It is probably even more beneficial to take enzymes on an empty stomach so they can get into your bloodstream to help the rest of the body besides just the GI tract breakdown food. Sytemic enzymes can help prevent the damaging effects of aging, like fibrin preventing the stiff joints people can get with age.

I would consider alpha lipoic acid essential.
Ortho, do you have any research on enzymes that you could share? I had a hard time finding what I needed to know the last time I looked for it.

Most of my research is secondary sources or books. I have some websites on enzymes bookmarked but haven't found any great sources online. I don't know about any studies on them though. I think there is more interest in enzymes in Europe than in the US from what I have read.
enzymestuff.com is Karen deFelice's website. She has several books out on enzymes.
