The $100 laptop moves closer to reality

Keep track of the latest news.

This looks like a very promising project. These laptops could be a very vital resource for third world children and their education. Potentially a good way to help boost the international reputation of the United States, too.

LOL. I have heard that a for profit venture could make the laptop at less than a charity one. (as is often the case I suppose)

There was talk of selling these to the public late this year but I am not sure if it will happen. The price was way too high. Maybe they should just wait two years when decent laptops can be bought on the market for $200.

We just bought a Dell, for 426 that runs better (well more memory and speed at least) than the thousand dollar Mac I purchased a year ago.

But remember, this isn't jsut about computing and price. These laptops have very specific requirements. They need to be rugged (the idea is they are being used in very poor regions of africa. Lots of dirt etc. Plus they are often used outside, so they are designed with a screen which has an 'inside' setting and an 'outside' setting, to offset glare so the screen is always viewable.

They are also majorly stripped down with regards to the software so they actually perform very quickly. They need to have a tiny power consumption so that the wind-up aspect works efficiently enough.

I do remember seeing a story recently though that they had a problem with the kids constantly using the computers for porn. Typical LOL.

Obviously the creators of the $100 laptop haven't seen that video yet: The Internet is for Porn

Exactly. The normal computational price drops are finally hitting the mobile market.
