There is some fascinating historical background to the Easter holiday.

Hints in the New Testament Apocrypha lead biblical scholars to a hypothesized Q Gospel containing references to the Easter Bunny as the real person who nailed Jesus to the cross. This is why we worship the Easter Bunny today. I expect a Dan Brown novel on this at some point.

Sounds like the most recent South Park episode. They had a whole thing about how Peter was actually a rabbit, and the first pope, and how there is a royal order protecting a rabbit now that should be the true pope. They brought in elements of the Da Vinci Code and stuff. It was pretty funny.

I've always wondered what is with the "easter bunny". What sort of religious significance could this possibly have? Also, why eggs? Why dye eggs? IT'S SO $#()%ING RANDOM

EDIT: Ahhh, found it:

I've got little ones to make holiday magic for! no crying or vampire bunnies! couple square cubit feet of giant baskets and hydrogenated oil/dye free chocolates -- tons of pastel plastic eggs (filled with quotes from great humans, along with candy, so we have some educational stuff to discuss!)

I'm even going to have a separate hunt for each kid-- a division in the front yard for the 10 year old girls in the family, one if the back yard for all 8 year old boys of the family--one inside for the five year old girls :)

oh, we'll talk of the pagan origins along with the interposed Christian ones, have hunts at church--a slavic flower communion and Easter brunch with family from out of town!

(I had the most fun writing in holidays in my book of the future "21 Century Kids" did Christmas, Ramadan, Earth Day-- if I write the sequel thats been forming in my head--I'll have to work in Easter--somehow :) )
