Recently I have been supplementing with Garden of Life Goatmilk Colostrum.

I'm wondering if anyone has taken colostrum before and what your views on it are?

here is this website for further research:

I'm interested in what effects you get with your supplementation, and will track this thread.

Goatmilk and goat colostrum is very different than human milk and human colostrum. There are many specialized antibodies in human colostrum, they give the baby a boost for three months or so till the baby's immune system starts growing. The human immune system is not fully developed till 6-7 years, when the molars are erupting as well, when archeological records and many areas of the world today wean, and the human child's size relative to its mother's and other animals indicates natural weaning around the same age.

Antibodies are picked up from the human baby's mother's milk over the years of breastfeeding. For an quick overview of the immunological benefits of breastmilk look at: http://www.kellymom....unefactors.html (that will give you an idea also of why there is a 35% to 85% reduction, depending on which disease one is looking at, in breastfed babies vs. formula)

Breast milk changes antibodies depending on what the mother or baby is exposed to. I've seen studies showing that supplemental cow's colostrum, and raw cow milk with its anti-bodies intact, do not build a human child's immune system adequately yet and can not be replicated for use in human infant formula. I've not seen studies looking at goat colostrum, but I would suspect the same. I didn't see anything at the that Colostrom Institute website, on their long string of study references that would indicate otherwise. In fact I saw one study listed, concerning Bovine colustrum and premature infant,s that I'd seen referenced by breast-feeding activists showing that other species colostrum did not work as well as human. Some of the studies there were pertaining to the advantages of human colostrum for human babies.

In some parts of India even today it is common practice to acquire the colostrom from a new mother to heal very sick elderly. In America very wealthy families, who are educated about the scientific benefits of breast-milk, but can not themselves breast-fed due to their work schedule are hiring wet-nurses. I've heard of this before, and just saw an interesting article in Time today on it. http://www.time.com/...ite-cnn-partner

Yes,

My friend who is from Pakistan told me that the young men take it for an energy boost sometimes.

He thinks its a very powerful substance. But is it the same quality when you buy it in supplement form, that’s the big question.

i originally began supplementing with this due to a malabsorption condition. what i noticed afterwards was a greater clarity of mind and a huge increase in energy.

what i do know about goats milk as opposed to cows milk is that it is much more easily absorbed due to its smaller fat globules. It is closer to actual human milk.

That is true about it being more similar to human milk, yet there are major differences in the immune factors.

Very interesting--do the young men take human milk?

In America there are human milk banks, but the milk is for premature babies, or ones with serious allergies. I've not heard of any adults getting it. Would be interesting to have a supplement of human colostrum-- but almost impossible to bring it to market.

My 2yo boy seems to respond well to bovine colostrum supplememtation. He was a very chesty child, always wheezing and burbling. Started him on colostrum and he seems to have really cleared up. He did have Colostrum at birth and mothers milk until he was about 10 months old.

I have a boy who is now 8 who had asthma attacks up till age 4 1/2 that caused him to be on medications till recently. He only has attacks now when we are in very dusty or polluted areas. He has problems with sinus infections almost year round. I will look at the various colostrum supplements and try one for him during his next bout of several months long colds. (he usually ends up on anti-biotics) I am happy that he did get human breastmilk and colostrum, as from what I'm read, I'm sure his problems would be worse if he'd not. I'll post back here, if I find anything from supplementing colostrum with him. May not be till this next fall/winter though till he gets severe enough for me to try... (sept.--feb. for us)

I've been using it for a while. I started on 3 tablespoons 3x a day between meals and now I'm on a maintenance dose of 1 in the AM fasted. I like the idea of using colostrum very much. I feel an immediate boost of energy and mental clarity and I don't get sick even when everyone around me is coughing their lungs out. The best price I could find was the symbiotics product on Iherb. It's 1 lb. for $50. Though, I wish there were other sources! I called a few manufacturers about buying in bulk and for the better price, I had to buy a min. of 20 kilos at a time.

I belong to that small percentage of people that cannot put on muscle. It doesn't matter how much protein I eat or how heavy I lift, my body just doesn't respond to weight training. I realize this could be due to many factors, marfan habitus, adrenal issues, etc. However, I do notice that I react more positively to weight training when I use colostrum.

One thing that concerns me though, is that most colostrum is put under a low-heat pasteurization process and I'm not sure how that affects the proteins and growth factors. One manufacturer told me I had nothing to worry about but I still worry that I'm getting a less potent product. I also wonder if the de-fatting and removal of lactose affects the composition somehow. I wish I could find raw colostrum untouched and as it.

My 9-year old, 100lbs dog had elevated kidney levels (BUN and Creatinine) earlier this year - the recommended "kidney cleanse" diet included colostrum which is suggested for short-term use only. I gave him this product . The "kidney cleanse" diet was substantially the same as his regular diet with the protein content significantly reduced and the carbohydrates similarly increased. After two weeks on this diet I had his blood levels checked again and whilst his BUN had reduced the creatinine level remained elevated - the only other reading which had significantly changed was that of the AP ( alkaline phosphatase ) which had almost tripled in this two week period from 27 to 70. Two weeks after finishing the diet the AP level returned to normal. Prior to giving the colostrum his AP level had remained virtually constant over a period of at least eighteen months and at least half a dozen similar blood tests during this period.

I wouldn't have though much about this, however, I found a post in the dog diet related Yahoo group from a few years back regarding the "kidney cleanse" -

"We put Tucker on the kidney diet with some herbs from the vets and
now his levels are back to normal. His alk phos did go up but no one can
figure out why."

I imagine that the colostrum supplementation caused this in both instances since there are a number of similar examples to be found in Pubmed.

I've read its very important for Colostrum to be drawn in the first 6 hours from the cow, after that it loses potency. Also I think its important that a cow is grass-fed and as pure sourced as possible. The best 2 companies I've found are Synertek, they use grass-fed cows and 6 hour milking, and Bulkcolostrum which says they are Organic and 6 hour milking. I'm using the lozenges from Synertek, started at 2 per day = 400 mg, have now upped it to 600 mg. I'm 51 and dont feel earth shakingly better abut it feels good for me and I've probably had better energy and softer skin. I bought Synertek because they said they use grass-fed cows and I didnt see that on Bulkcolostrum's site. Both sites have lots of info about Colustrum.

A good site for reviews of Colostrum is at iherb.com. Most reviews are on Symbiotics brand which is not first 6 hour milking, but it gets mostly positive reviews. A few say they felt nothing though, but should give people a good idea what Colostrum does.

Wouldn't the culturing destroy all the immune factors and such ?

Thats a great question that I have no answer for. I was simply stating what it has written on the bottle about it being 100x more probiotic than yogurt here is a link

Does culturing yougurt destroy its nutritional value? I havent been sick in years so Im not as conerned with its effect on my immune system specifically.

Find a farmer up there that lets his cows eat grass and not grains or corn, then ask him for some colostrum and leave your cell phone#. When a calf is born the first gallon should go to the calf and then he will give you a 1/2 gallon. This stuff is not for the faint at heart in taste but I feel pretty good on days I drink it.

I take a colostrum product from a German company called 'cLive', the liquid, not the powder. Here the casein and fat are removed leaving only a slightly yellowish liquid. Cows are grass fed and they use a patented production method in order to preserve all the healthy stuff.

Very good product, imo. Don't know if it's sold outside of Europe. I don't take it year round, only for a couple of weeks at the beginning of spring and fall.
