I have been on again/off again regarding taking supplements. And I admit that for a Transhumanist I have only a minimal knowledge regarding this rather key area. I would ask for recommendations regarding what at a minimum (and beyond) I should be taking.

I currently take:

multivitamin
vitamin E
garlic
fish oil
B complex
DHEA
Glocosamine & Chondroitin mix
spirulina algae

Not exactly the full Kurzweil recommended list! LOL

I usually get my supplements from Spring Valley, which I buy from my local Wal-Mart retailer. And a few times I have purchased online from Puritan's Pride. I'm wondering if this is adequate or should I purchase from a more expensive place like GNC? The folks there claim lower quality supplements have fillers which make absorption much harder/impossible & take the place of active ingredients.

Thank you,

John

GNC = no no no

Good brands to use are: AOR, NOW Foods, & Carlson's. Buy them from the net and save some money.

Well, what are your goals my friend?

GNC is right to say that lower quality supplements have fillers, etc...but it's ironic as they are on of the first names to come into my head when it comes to poor quality supps. All the brands luv2 mentioned are top notch.

Your personal goals are of paramount importance when designing a regime. Do you have medical problems to take into consideration? How's your diet looking?

A quality multivitamin is for many the place to start. AOR, LEF, and NOW make several quality multis. I like AOR's Ortho-core, it contains a huge variety of daily essentials, including the full vitamin e spectrum...the vitamin e you are taking is most likely just Alpha-tocopherol. You could also drop the B complex (many of which are also poorly formulated, but not all) with a good multi. Make sure that your fish oil is molecularly distilled.

You're off to a good start with your list, I would highly recommend some phytonutrients/anti-oxidants...pomegranate, blueberry, berries in general, broccoli. Get them through supplements or preferably the fruits/veg themselves.

luv2increase & mitkat, thank you for the recommendations! : ) I find it insightful what was said about GNC (after what they told me!). lol My goals are to just maintain my good health and try to slow down aging as much as possible. I realize for the latter goal it would probably take a much more extensive regime than what I'm doing now. I admit my current diet could be better.

I did think a B complex might be overkill. I will look into phytonutrients and try to eat more vegetables (which I do happen to like).

What are your thoughts on Lutein for healthy eyes? I'm concerned about sun exposure/skin & eye health since I live in "sunny as hell" Arizona.

Looking forward to any further insights you have.

John

i thought id add my two cents.

the essientials are
a GOOD multi vit( ORTHO CORRRE :D)
fishoil-nuff said
benfotiamine- clinically proven to be safe and effective (how many supps can you say that about?:))

also whey protien powder is a good one.

other possibilities that i suggest you look into are
Taurine
Rhodiola
Ashwagandha
I like these because they all seem to have a wide range of interesting possible benefits. have a read of the monographs in the research forum too.

I would drop DHEA. Also, take ginseng with ginkgo from time to time.

ginko is actually under-rated. It works quite well, but has to be cycled. I cycle mine every 3 weeks.
