Hi,
How long do you find it takes for melatonin to kick in and how long do the effects last for? I'm considering using it for naps but don't want to use too much or feel a little tired afterward.
Thanks.

I would think it would be a bad idea to use for naps since it sets your body clock.

I read the half life is 35-50 minutes. I don't take it unless i want to sleep for at least 4 hours. Some melatonin is time released, and some is instant release. The time released melatonin usually activates @ 4 hours.

whats the best dosage to use for a 4 hour sleep and a full 8 hour sleep? I have heard some say that less is better than more for good restful nights.....

I am 240 lbs and take 1mg instant release and 1mg time released and that does me great for 8-10 hours. Lots of people recommend .3-.6mg per dose. I recommend getting a pill splitter and trying different doses to see what you prefer.

Somethings to look for are:
-Waking up about 3-5 hours after taking pill
+++++This usually means that you are taking too much, and your body overcompensates causing it to dispose all of the melatonin quickly.
-Feeling overly irritated
+++++Melatonin in ones system makes one cranky if you are awake
-Vivid dreams
+++++Taking Melatonin increases vividness of dreams.

i don't get 8 hours sleep from melatonin but i shure have less trouble falling asleep and getting a decent 6-7 hours rest. I use 1mg instand&1mg timerelease weekdays. weekends i sometimes use 3mg (got some left...)

I'm about 180lbs. I have problems falling asleep (mind is too active) and problems staying asleep (wake up around 4am). Melatonin is great to help fall asleep, but i find myself either waking up too soon or very groggy all next day. I've tried varying amounts from 1mg sublingual to time release. Nothing seems to work.

3mg of melatonin I believe has made me fall into deeper sleeps. The times I have woken up early (say in 4 hours sleep) I have felt as if I have slept much longer. Then when I get to go back to sleep, Its like shoving in a bonus nights sleep in 1 night!
