It was not fresh at all, really chalky, unflavorful. The color was almost beige white.

Right now, i use NOW Maca, i empty 4 caps and enjoy the taste of them in the morning. This has a nice golden brown color.

The Maca monster looks really interesting,

"It Takes

(42 pounds)

Make 1 Kg.
(2.2 Lbs.)
Of Maca
Monster! " WOW! I bet that stuff tastes awesome!

The website is a joke, but the guy is for real. I've ordered from him a couple of times, quick shipping, good stuff.

i ordered a bottle of kanna, a couple of lb's of his various types of kava and 1 kg of sun dried raw micropowdered maca root. I also recieved a bottle of kacip fatimah as per request by my gf who's interested in trying it. My order arrived in less than 5 business days.....this morning actually.

I tried the Kanna today at around 2 pm....2 caps(100mg) on an empty stomach. I found the effect to be slightly euphoric, i was in a good mood all afternoon.....i also had mild appetite reducing effects, as i was very hungry when i took it but forgot about eating for another 2 hours afterwards. Not that i was looking for the second effect but its worth noting.

I wont be trying the maca until july, i finished a 4 week round of Tongkat almost 6 weeks ago and im in no rush to start stressing my endocrine system again.....but im looking forward to it, gotta love maca....mixes really well with a bit of chocolate(ground raw nibs preferably) and honey+almond milk.

Despite my maca being certified organic, non irridiated and shipped straight from the farmers so supposed to be fresh, i've never really liked the taste of maca.... Maybe I have it too strong? I put a tablespoon into a mug and add plain water. Mixed with cocoa its alright though!

Why would people irridiate it though? Surely no health concious person will go out of their way to buy irridiated food like maca? Any websites that brag about their maca being irridiated? lol

I dont believe Maca stresses the endocrine system, I consider it more to be like a ginseng.

diamondhead- really? I heard that it does influence excretion of lutenizing hormone, although I couldn't cite you a study, its just hearsay from a long forgotten forum in the back of my mind somewhere....and i've also heard that its something that should be cycled(not unlike any adaptogen)....so i kind of put those two tidbits together and assumed its influence on endocrines(specifically the HPTA axis).

I could very well be wrong though. :)

Effect of Lepidium meyenii (Maca), a root with aphrodisiac and fertility-enhancing properties, on serum reproductive hormone levels in adult healthy men.
Gonzales GF, Córdova A, Vega K, Chung A, Villena A, Góñez C.

Instituto de Investigaciones de la Altura, and Department of Biological and Physiological Sciences (Faculty of Sciences and Philosophy), Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, PO 1843, Lima, Peru.

Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is a Peruvian hypocotyl that grows exclusively between 4000 and 4500 m in the central Andes. Maca is traditionally employed in the Andean region for its supposed aphrodisiac and/or fertility-enhancing properties. This study was a 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel trial in which active treatment with different doses of Maca Gelatinizada was compared with a placebo. The study aimed to test the hypothesis that Maca has no effect on serum reproductive hormone levels in apparently healthy men when administered in doses used for aphrodisiac and/or fertility-enhancing properties. Men aged between 21 and 56 Years received 1500 mg or 3000 mg Maca. Serum levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, prolactin, 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone, testosterone and 17-beta estradiol were measured before and at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks of treatment with placebo or Maca (1.5 g or 3.0 g per day). Data showed that compared with placebo Maca had no effect on any of the hormones studied nor did the hormones show any changes over time. Multiple regression analysis showed that serum testosterone levels were not affected by treatment with Maca at any of the times studied (P, not significant). In conclusion, treatment with Maca does not affect serum reproductive hormone levels.

So, no, no effect on LH or any of the other sex hormones..

I use Navitas Naturals brand. It's good stuff. Makes me want to punch through a brick wall (we're not talking about my fist here).

Really Maca is supposed to taste good? It's smells nice, but I find the taste utterly repulsive. There's something about that flavour that I find very disagreable. I can't explain what's bad about it, it's just weird. Maybe I'll try a different source next time. For now I'll just keep on chugging it as fast as possible.

Didn't want to try therootofthematter.ca before as they web site looks very sketchy but now that I have some recomendations I'll give it a shot. It's a Canadian site too!!! :) That makes me very happy, almost as happy as Maca makes me...

Anyone that uses Maca regularly concerned about this finding?

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) and yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) in combination with silymarin as food supplements: in vivo safety assessment.
Valentová K, Stejskal D, Bartek J, Dvorácková S, Kren V, Ulrichová J, Simánek V.Department of Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry, Palacký University, Olomouc, Czech Republic. kata.valentova@email.cz

Yacon and maca are native Andean crops with growing popularity as food supplements often in combination with other components, e.g. silymarin. There are however no published data on their toxicity and safety in humans. The aim of our randomized placebo-controlled 90-day study was to evaluate the effects of yacon and maca in combination with silymarin on plasma and lipoprotein lipids, serum glucose and safety parameters in patients suffering from the metabolic syndrome. No adverse effects were found in volunteers using silymarin (0.8 g/day), silymarin+yacon (0.8+2.4 g/day) and silymarin+maca (0.6+0.2 g/day). A moderate AST level and diastolic blood pressure increase was found in volunteers using maca (0.6 g/day). In conclusion, the combination silymarin+yacon appears to be promising as a nutraceutical in the prevention of diseases with a proatherogenic lipoprotein profile and liver steatosis. The effect of maca on AST level and blood pressure must be considered when using high doses of maca powder. This effect could be reversed by supplementation with silymarin.

No. I've been using a much larger dose of Maca than they studied (9.37g) along with several liver-taxing drugs and I have no elevation of liver enzymes, and my blood pressure is normal. No idea how they achieved that result, maybe the fact that the patients had metabolic syndrome is confounding things.

I tried maca for a few months a while ago but didn't notice anything different. I found six studies on maca back then, with one of them suggesting only red maca is effective. The powder I had was yellow.

Would anyone like to guess what maca's mechanism of action might be? I have been unable to find anything helpful in the literature.

Of some concern to males may be that Maca is somewhat estrogenic (in vitro, but still): http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/16528448

I've been using maca for months and my estrogen levels are low low low....

I've also wondered about the mechanism and can't find anything online either.

I had a bad experience with this guy. I see LOTS of great testimonials, so I suppose it was just me. But after I placed an order I found out he was out of stock, had no idea when it was going to be in, had no idea if I had even placed an order for other products, got nasty with me when I asked questions. It was just all bad. He did refund my money as soon as I asked, so that is one good thing. It's too bad because he has a lot of interesting products, but his web site and bedside manner sucks! Never again, not with this guy!

I had a bad experience with root of the matter as well about a year ago. Just curious if most liked this guy or not. He actually was rude to me and quite offensive and abrasive in an email. When I waited 2 months and got nothing after a huge order.

The worst part is, his stuff looks unique and I want to try several things that it seems isn't available elsewhere (at least altogether).

Maca was definitely one I wanted to use as I've got little effects from the NOW brand (despite them being a great brand to me).

I am kicking around the idea of using this guy...I really want to try some of his stuff...

Any feedback?
