.The first known reference of Polygamy and religion is in the BIBLE. In fact, a few Prophets practiced Polygamy several thousand years before "Mormons". If the Bible is true and Prophets practiced Polygamy, then Mormons were continuing a practice mentioned in the Bible. So if you are critical of Mormons who practiced Polygamy then your critique should extend to the Prophets in the Bible as well
It is well understood that none of the patriarchs and prophets of the Scriptures was sinless or had attained perfection. Take, for example, King David, who was a great man after God's heart. Acts 13:22. He had one of his own soldiers killed just so he could take the man's wife. God was clearly displeased with this. 2 Samuel 11:1-27. In Hebrews 11:1-40, it is also shown that the patriarchs and prophets as well as the New Testament apostles and followers of Jesus Christ were not yet perfect but would become so at Christ's return. Verse 40.
Only Jesus Christ was sinless and perfect in God's sight, and Jesus clearly indicated that the monogamy practiced in the beginning was the ideal. Genesis 2:20-25; Matthew 19:3-9. Notice that God joined only one man and one woman together. From this teaching, it can be clearly understood that momogamy will be the ideal and the practice in God's Kingdom on earth when Christ returns.
King Solomon was the biggest practitioner of polygamy in the Scriptures. He practiced polygamy in direct violation of Deuteronomy 17:17 which says "neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away." As a result, Solomon was led astray and the Kingdom of Israel was divided. 1 Kings 11:1-13. (Also notice how God had warned the Israelites through the prophet Samuel not to choose a king to lead them. 1 Samuel 8:1-22).
