I've heard that since MSM is actually sulfur, it has caused
allergic and/or detoxification or "healing crisis" reactions
in some people.

I wonder why might be the experience of the people
in this forum who has taken it.

i take between 1-3g of msm (optiMSM brand) every day...

the only only side effect i ever got was less acne, which is exactly why i started taking it in the first place.

I had some tendinitis that refused to go away for months. Topical MSM made it a bit better, so I went out and bought caps. Then the tendinitis got a lot worse for a day (or two? It's been a while.) before going away completely.

Do you have any specific examples to share?

Great to hear Krillin.

Been supplementing with MSM for years along with Glucosamine/Chondroitin. Very helpful for a bodybuilder as the joints are always under duress.

msm is a type of sulfur but that is not why it causes a healing crisis. People will often experience a herx or healing reaction to it because it is a powerful detoxicant apparently by making cells more permeable and able to excrete toxins. The sulfur could possibly cause an allergic reaction, but I doubt it, as MSM potentiates some effects of cortisol, so it can have antiinflammatory effects by increasing your own cortisol's ability to be an antiinflammatory same things goes for anti allergic effects. Alot of the effects of msm can be attributed to its cortisol enhancing effects. I am not sure if it shares the catabolic effects though or other deleterious effects that higher cortisol action can have. MSM can do many things but for those taking it to detox, some people slowly work their way up (over a period of weeks to months) to 12 grams or more a day. Slowly, because it will detox you and if you were to start at this amount, you would certainly regret it and wish you hadnt.
Drink extra water and it might help flush you out, also vitamin c is supposed to synergize well with it, possibliy through its glutathione enhancing detox ability.

I don't have a complete biochemical pathway to offer for the detoxification, but many of MSM's effects might be epigenetic in origin. As a methyl donor, it might contribute to DNA methylation. Any thoughts?

Do most people on the forum take MSM as part of their daily supplement regime?

Which product, how much and at what time of the day is best to take it? Thanks

I supplement equal amounts NAC and MSM to boost glutathione levels which definitely seems to help me, specifically it makes me happier, more exuberent and expressive, and have a bit more energy. I have aspergers and chronic fatigue syndrome; interestingly, low glutathione levels are implicated both in autism spectrum disorders and CFS. If I had to guess though NAC is doing most of the work (read one study that MSM boosts glutathione... in mice).

MSM used to give me terrible stomach pains and diarrhea. I slowly increased the dose taking breaks - sometimes 3 or 4 days in between. Now I can take 2 grams a day no problem. I think it helps with joint maintenance. I've taken higher doses at times, but it seems to promote gray hair at the point of about 3 or 4 grams for me.
