Where do bot nets fit in terms of the modern trend towards increasingly powerful AI?

From this article it appears that online banks, online casinos and the PCs of unwilling victims of being used for all sorts of mischief. Botnets are being used to launder money and rig online casino games. It's not to difficult to imagine that some of these botnets could be inside government departments and financial institutions possibly even central banks in some nations.
