I once saw a gentleman on CNN walking through a casino, high as a kite on Wellbutrin. He said in the interview that he is not clinically depressed- he simply enjoys the "high" he get's from taking this SSRI.

Question:

Is there such a thing as a "safe" SSRI that does not make you fat or want to kill yourself? (Prozac)

Regards,

Cortex

Wellbutrin is not a SSRI. The percent of users that would feel euphoria from it even short term in high doses has to be quite small.

I've used 3 SSRI's and they have less efficacy than wellbutrin
inducing euphoria. One exception is the use of dangerous combinations of SSRI's and MAO-A inhibitors. That will flood
your brain with serotonin making you giddy. When I done it my
throat became constricted to the point I could barely breath so consider it a better way to kill yourself than to improve mood.

Wellbutrin is an NDRI, not an SSRI. It works on dopamine and epinephrine.

You can't get high on it. It's a stupid and unrealistic idea. Can't get high on SSRIs either.

They're as far from recreational drugs as you can get.

Wellbutrin is dangerous as a recreational drug. In high doses it might induce seizures.

There is a way that some people can get "high", in a sense, on SSRI's. Something like 20% of people can induce a hypomania with a large(ish) dose of an SSRI. That can be a pretty enjoyable state, although I don't think I'd call it a "high" in the classic "I just ate 5 grams of shrooms" sense.

I did experience certain kind of "high" from Prozac in the beginning of my treatment, although it wasn't a high in general sense. It was more like deep peace and intensified experiences, which runs against the general notion that SSRIs are zombifying drugs. The experience of ADs differs largely from person to person and actually from culture to culture. People who have fast-paced thrill-seeking personalities find SSRIs numbing, others (e.g. I'm a long term practicioner of yoga and meditation) found it enhancing. But don't take pharmaceuticals to make your life more interesting, unless you really know what you're getting yourself into.

The dose of bupropion necessary to inhibit DA and NE to a substantial extent would raise the risk of seizure quite a bit. I remember reading article in which the author concluded that 400 mg immediate release bupropion at once may be "mildly attractive" to stimulant abusers, but that human trials could not be conducted with such a dose because of safety concerns.
