I saw this on Nova a couple weeks ago and thought it was interesting. It takes some people who are out of shape and tries to get them to the point where they can run an entire marathon. (over the course of several months) It is only about an hour long, but being a runner I found it quite interesting. They do lots of tests to show how people's bodies change over the course of it to be in better shape, discuss the differences in muscle types of different people, etc.

By the way, I am sure most people know this, but for reference sake, since they mentioned miles a lot (and some people are not in the US/UK mindset of using miles):
1 mile = 1600 meters (actually 1609.344 meters, but it is usually rounded to 1600 meters when someone says it)
1 kilometer = 1000 meters (of course)
marathon = 26 miles 385 yards (or 42.195 kilometers)

I'd like to work my way up to running a marathon at some point. I found the most interesting part of the documentary how few calories are actually burned while running. (depending on how much body weight, speed run, etc, only a little over a hundred calories a mile run) I knew it was low, but I didn't know it was that low.

Come on, if you're going to set a goal...set it high.

I've known people that could roll out of bed and run a marathon. 100 miles across a mountain or 135 in Hell are a challenge.

Yes, but since I don't want to die, I think I will start out with a marathon or 2 before I move up to ultramarathons. There certainly are quite a few ultramarathons worldwide, though. The 100km Ultra Race part of the Antarctic Ice Marathon (known as the "coldest 100 in the world") seems the most intriguing.

Of course, if you really want to get extreme, you can do some ultra triathlons. The most extreme of which is the Enduroman, where one has to run 87 miles (140 km), swim the English Channel (really difficult in and of itself), and then bike 180 miles (almost 290 km). There have only been 4 people to ever have done it, the fastest at 80 hours, 5 minutes.

So many ultra events, so little ultra time...

I actually have an outstanding challenge with a friend from a couple of years ago. We made the bet that we were each going to qualify for the WS100 and toss our names in the drawing for the 2010 race. I really, really hope he's forgotten or given up on it. He's gotten married and I've stopped running any kind of distance. Not like I was ever good at it, though.

For that one, they give you a bronze belt buckle if you finish in under 30 hours and a nicer silver one if you finish in under 24 hours. (which by all accounts is difficult to do)

Want to join in the challenge?

I have so many activity-related goals in this life, I would spend decades training for them.

I'm certainly down, but like I said I would like to do a marathon or 2 before upping the anti. By 2010, hopefully I would have done that, though.

What are some of your other activity-related goals? I'd like to climb Mount Everest some day.

Mostly just to become good enough to be competitive in some sports that I dabble in or just think would be a lot of fun more than any one specific goal.

Kayaking
Racquetball
Ultraendurance activities
Olympic Lifting
Powerlifting/Strongman/Highland Games
Mountain Climbing/Hiking
Caving
Snowboarding
Tennis
Motocross/Rally/Baja/Drag Racing (I guess this counts)
Football

Currently, I can only claim that I've become fairly advanced in racquetball. They aren't really goals I guess in that they aren't realistic given the current number of years that I can expect to remain in the physical condition required for them. For example, it would probably take me around 15 years of consistent training to become competitive with the big boys in powerlifting. And at that point, the odds are high my body would have sustained enough injuries to limit any further athletic goals. More of things I'd like to do once LE/regenerative therapies are available.

So, uh, this thread inspired me to do some prolonged jogging/running tonight just to see where I'm at. I'm currently very aware of why I stopped doing it.

Let us know how far you get.

I have been running during the daytime as much as possible (after work) now instead of at night since it is so cold outside. I do prefer night running whenever I can, though.
