Firstly, is there a difference between L-Huperzine A and Huperzine A?
What is the recommended dosage (I can't seem to get anything remotely consistent on this)?
Is taking Huperzine + Choline (think one promotes buildup of the other) a good thing or a bad thing?
Can I substitute Huperzine for a Choline if I'm taking a racetam?
I bought some Huperzine from Unique Nutrition; they claimed they had a natural analogue of it which was 3x more powerful than the synthetic. Anybody know anything about that?
While I'm at it:
There seems to be some stuff buried in the boards about LifeMirage and Unique Nutrition; I get the impression that I shouldn't buy from them in the future, but if somebody could link me to an explanation of that situation or just give a concise one here that would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, the above link regarding huperzine for neuropathic pain has this to say:

Natural huperzine A is a chiral molecule also called L-huperzine A or (-)-huperzine A. The prefix (-) is typically used to describe so-called "left-handed" natural chiral huperzine compositions. However, Huperzine can also be synthesred as a right-handed (+) molecule or as a racemic mixture (.+-.).

I think the first sentence indicates that huperzine A is the same as either L-huperzine A or (-)-huperzine A.

As an aside, I've gathered that the poster LifeMirage is akin to Voldemort on this forum, though I do not know exactly why.

Thank you, luminous; that should help me clear up some of the confusion when surveying the market.
Thank you, ajnast4r, though I feel like I need to take a shower after browsing through that slimy incident.

So is L-Huperzine A from Cognitive Nutrition (Unique Nutrition) a good product? Anyone tried it? Is there any chance that it might be contaminated since they don't do 3rd party testing?

Huperzine A (HupA) has two D and L enantiometers, and some studies have suggested that the L form has greater potency. But I would insist on seeing a certificate of analysis from any company that claims their product contains only L-Huperzine.

The recommended dose is around 50-200 mcg, though I'd recommend staying in the lower range of dosing (less than 100 mcg) if your otherwise healthy.

Combining HupA with choline sources will probably increase the likelihood of cholinergic side-effects.

The necessity of a choline source when using piracetam is in large measure a myth, IMO, that is not substantiated by any actual evidence other than anecdotal. Choline may be synergistic, but piracetam has no documented "choline-depleting" effect.

Ask Unique Nutrition for a certificate of analysis for the Huperzine A that you bought.

The whole fiasco around Unique Nutrition is a result of the apparently insane president of the company.

Together, data gathered in pre-clinical and clinical studies suggest that Huperzine A has several key differentiating features:

  • Multiple biologic activities that may impact Alzheimer's disease and its symptoms, within a single therapy
  • May exhibit significant neuroprotective activity, including anti-oxidant, anti-excito-toxic and anti-amyloid properties; animal studies indicate that Huperzine A pretreatment is protective against organophosphate-induced nerve cell death and can reduce glutamate-induced cell death
  • Better penetration through the blood-brain-barrier, higher oral bioavailability and longer duration of AChE inhibitory action compared with other currently-available AChE inhibitors
  • Peripheral cholinergic side effects (gastrointestinal) minimal and lower at therapeutic doses compared with other currently-available AChE inhibitors
  • In both traditional medicine and pharmaceutical product forms, Huperzine A has already established a long track record of safety and efficacy in China

Is it fair to say that huperzine is really good at what it does?
