A simple question. I use a neti pot to clean out sinuses regularly to prevent the build up of bacteria mainly. But I have a concern because when I irrigate both sinuses the water seems to get into the tubes and into my ears, it quickly drains out... but I'm concerned about washing viruses or bacteria into my ears... When I last had a cold about 7-8 months ago I used the neti pot and for the first time I ended up with ears that got infected with the virus and clogged up for 2 weeks, which later my Tinnitus came on.

Is it worth carrying on using the neti pot, at the moment to irrigate the sinuses I have to tilt my head to the side, maybe if I get some sort of bulb syringe? and keep head straight it would stop the water going into the ears?

You can look on you tube to see what neti pot is and how it works.

I use a neti pot once a week or so and yes what you mention is a concern. Personally, if I have a cold or infection. I had one once for the whole of 2007 (really amazing in and of itself and a good advertisement for supplementation and a healthy lifestyle) I did not use the neti pot. Basically your sinus are much bigger than you think (at least than I thought before I studied them) and they have connections to your ears. I personally use the neti pot as a preventative measure and to wash out allergens (a constant battle). I personally wouldn't use it if you had any sort of sinus infection or sinus cold because yes you could wash the virus or bacteria into your ears. I know the neti pot advertisers say things like "wash the cold away" but I don't think this is the best way to use the product.

if water is getting into the back of your throat and ears when ur using a neti pot, youre not tilting your head far forward enough. your face should be parallel to the floor
