Hi!

I recently added magnesium to my daily stack of supplements - I've been reading the forums for only two months now, so it's still a small stack ;-)

It's magnesium oxide (I know, the worst I could get) with 400mg magnesium and added B vitamins (B1 4.2mg, B6 5mg, B12 5ug, Folic acid 600ug). The effect on my physical condition is great. My blood pressure seemed to normalize almost instantly and i feel like having a higher energy level. Not a big surprise since I'm eating not very healthy (working on it) and having almost every single symptom you could find in any magnesium deficiency symptoms list. But I actually didn't expect it to be that good.

It also should improve my sleep quality - that's what I got the mag for in the first place - but it actually makes sleeping a torture for me. I wake up very often, feel dizzy in the morning, have trouble getting out of bed and have big problems concentrating the whole day. It's not only a small and tolerable effect, it really screws my mind and I'm almost unable to work and make mistakes all the time. The first week I tried it, I took the magnesium on an empty stomach right before bedtime together mith 3mg timed release melatonin.

Could it be the B vitamins? I'm taking another mulitvitamin with a similar dose every morning.

I tried taking it in the morning or afternoon, but the effect is always the same. One to two hours after taking it, I'm having concentration problems. I'm full of energy now but not capable of doing anything useful with it :-(

Did anyone experience the same or has an idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

(Sorry for my bad english. At least you don't have to listen to my german accent :-)

I would guess it's the Bs, not the magnesium (unless your supplement is contaminated or something). I'm not sure if magnesium oxide is absorbed enough to really do anything at all -- besides being a laxative at high doses.

I've never heard of an effect like that from magnesium. I would try to find a different supplement that is only magnesium and nothing else, and see what that does for you.

My suggestion would be to try lowering the melatonin dose, or even stopping it for a few days and see if that helps.

I found that 3mg left me groggy the next day.

I got magnesium citrate now. Unfortunately, they only had it in combination with kaliumcitrate.
I tried lowering the melatonin dose already, but I had problems falling asleep and it didn't improve my sleep or next day feeling and it felt like my sleep quality got even worse.

Btw, is there a difference between taking ZMA and taking magnesium, zinc and B vitamins separately? I've heard of ZMA's effect of providing better sleep, but it's very expensive. So I tried getting the main components (in different forms, zma contains the magnesium as aspartatetc.).
