I remember Kurzwell speaking about using nanobots to carry oxygen through the human body and even to combat infections and diseases.

Where can I learn more about the technical aspects of these theories? Is there any research being done in this area? Are there any books or courses?

Also, what are the current obstacles we need to overcome before we are able to make this kind of thing a reality?

You could take some biotech or material science courses at your nearby college :)

These are called respirocytes I think; there was a fairly complete paper about them, and the link to it should be here, hosted on the foresight institute. Hope it helps :) .

Robert Freitas is a pioneer in theoretical nanorobotic designs and the diamondoid mechanosynthetic techniques necessary to build these designs. His website is here. There are still some basic proofs of concept necessary before we can start building nanobots, but considerable theoretical work has been completed and the experimental work is beginning.
