The next ExtroBritannia meeting is scheduled for Saturday the 6th of September 2003, in Cambridge, UK.

The theme of the get-together is "The engineering approach to life-extension". Life-extension researcher and promoter Aubrey de Grey will give a presentation on the subject, followed by an informal Q&A/discussion session.

THE PLAN

We will meet at 12,00 noon at the Salisbury Arms, 76 Tenison Road, Cambridge CB4 1PA, not far from the train station, and will order lunch at about 12,30. If this is your first time at an ExtroBritannia meeting, look out for a copy of Ray Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" being displayed at the table we'll be sitting at.

If you cannot make it for lunch, you can still reach us at the Salisbury Arms until about 2pm, when we'll decamp for the university’s department of genetics, for the presentation.

The next ExtroBritannia lunch/get-together is scheduled for Saturday the 11th of October at 12 noon in central London.

We will have two themes for the meeting, Nano & Bio: nanotechnological and biomedical interventions will both be needed to achieve our primary goal of a open-ended lifespan. Both technologies are under intense scrutiny right now and it is time we made our voice heard on the direction we want them to take.

NANO: In June 2003 the UK Government commissioned the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering to carry out an independent study of likely developments and whether nanotechnology raises or is likely to raise new ethical, health and safety or social issues which are not covered by current regulation. An entry to the study was submitted by two ExtroBritannia regulars, highlighting our concerns that nanotechnology’s development might suffer in a similar way to GM crops due to the action of idelogically motivated pressure groups. The next stage of the study will involve NGO workshops and public consultations: this is an unmissible chance of influencing public policy regarding what is arguably the holy grail of transhumanist technologies.

For further info on the study:
http://www.nanotec.org.uk/index.htm

BIO: Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence: Reasons Why Genuine Control of Aging may be Foreseeable. That was the title of the recently held 10th Congress of the International Association of Biomedical Gerontology and a few ExtroBritannia regulars attedend. Come along for views, comments and info on what’s happening in the field of practical life-extension research.

presentations: http://www.gen.cam.ac.uk/iabg10/

The next ExtroBritannia lunch/get-together is scheduled for Saturday the 8th of November, in Oxford, England.

The title of the meeting is "Meet Nick Bostrom, transhumanist philosopher and WTA founder": Nick will give a presentation on transhumanism, followed by a Q&A session.

We will meet at 1pm for lunch at "Chiang Mai" a Thai restaurant in the tiny Kemp Hall passage, about 10 meters off 130 High Street. If it's your first time at an ExtroBritannia meeting I'll be the guy clearly displaying a copy of Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" on the table. The talk will take place in a room at the Philosophy Faculty, but you won't be able to access the room unaccompanied, so it's essential to meet at the restaurant beforehand. We will be there until 2.30pm.

Chiang Mai, Kemp Hall Passage, 130A High Street, Oxford OX1 4DH
Tel: (01865) 202233

All Immortality Insitute members/symphatisers are more than welcome!

The food was not so good (I hear) but the meeting went really well.

Nick -undaunted by preaching to the choir- gave an interesting overview of transhumanism. That sparked a couple of inspired discussions.

It was also debated whether the world needs a British Transhumanist Association in addition to ExoBritannia. Since no clear result was reached, it most probably doesn't -- but I'll still keep the promise to fill the BTA website as soon as I am back in the country. (end of this month I guess)

To ImmInst readers: we concluded that striving for Immortality goes to the very core of all Transhuman endeavour and is the one unifying factor among the disparate fractions. [ii]

The next ExtroBritannia lunch/get-together is scheduled for Saturday the 6th of December starting at 12,00 noon in London.

We are having an early Xmas event, so let's call it a Transhuman Xmas!

There is no specific theme to discuss, so all transhumanist-related subjects are welcome. Whether you are interested in the philosophical (extropy, transhumanism, immortalism), or the practical side of things (current life-extension strategies, including cryonics), whether your interest is technological (AI, bio/nanotech) or political (transhumanist activism), you are invited to come along for a chat and/or to ask questions over lunch and/or a drink.

If it's your first time at an ExtroBritannia meeting I'll be the guy clearly displaying a copy of Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" on the table.

We will meet at midday for lunch at "The Plough and Harrow" a Wetherspoon pub in Hammersmith and will be there most of the afternoon. The nearest tube station is Hammersmith (District, Piccadilly and Hammersmith and City lines).

120-124 King Street
Hammersmith
London W6 4QU
Tel: 0208 735 6020

PLEASE NOTE: you will see a Wetherspoon pub just outside the tube station, at the start of King Street, but that's not the right Wetherspoon. You will need to walk five minutes down King Street, past the King's Mall Shopping Centre for the Plough and Harrow.

The next ExtroBritannia event is scheduled for Saturday the 21st of August in Holborn, London. Everyone invited.

This month's theme is: Meet the UK Transhumanist Association.

UKTA is the re-launched British Transhumanist Association. Its purpose is to spread transhumanist memes at all levels of British society through a mix of lobbying, outreach and education, and networking.

The event is structured in three segments:

1) 10,00am to 1,00pm: UKTA Board meeting. This is an open meeting and all those interested are invited to attend. The meeting's agenda involves internal organisational matters, the state of current projects, UKTA's aims for the rest of the year, and our relationship with the WTA.

2) 1,00pm to 2,00pm: Lunch

3) 2,00pm to 5,00pm: Meet the UK Transhumanist Association. An introduction to what UKTA is all about: aims, targets, current and future projects. Your chance to ask questions and make suggestions to the only pressure group with a transhumanist agenda in the UK.

WHERE & WHEN

Conway Hall - 10,00am-5,00pm (look for the "Artists' Room").

Lunch will be at a local pub (the Penderel's Oak), where we will also regroup for a chat over drinks after 5pm. You are welcome to join us there if you can't make it to the main event. If it is your first time at an ExtroBritannia meeting, look out for a copy of Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" displayed on the table we'll be sitting at.

ExtroBritannia's October event

Nick Bostrom: The Simulation Argument - Are You Living In a Computer Simulation?

The next ExtroBritannia event is scheduled for Saturday the 9th of
October in Oxford. Entrance is free. Everyone welcome.

This month, transhumanist philosopher Nick Bostrom will give us a
presentation on The Simulation Argument, the idea that you might
currently be literally living in a computer simulation, running on a
computer built by some advanced civilization. Films like The Matrix
and novels like Greg Egan's Permutation City have explored the idea
that we might be living in virtual reality. But what evidence is there for or against this hypothesis? And what are its implications?
We should take the simulation-hypothesis seriously - if we deny it
then we are committed to surprising predictions about the future
possibilities for our species.

Further information: http://www.simulation-argument.com/

WHERE & WHEN

The event is structured in two parts:

1) You can join us for a pre-event chat and lunch at a local
(Japanese) restaurant between 12,00 noon to 1,45pm.

2) Nick Bostrom's presentation on the Simulation Argument, at the
Faculty of Philosophy, University Of Oxford, between 2,00pm to 5,00pm
(approx.)

The next ExtroBritannia event is scheduled for Saturday the 30th of April 2005 starting at 2pm at Conway Hall, Holborn, London. Everyone welcome. Entrance is free.

The title of this month’s presentation is:

Nootropic drugs and nutrients, their role in the aging individual.

Guest-speaker:

Phil Micans, PharmB., TecII
Vice President IAS Group
www.antiaging-systems.com

Phil Micans has degrees in Food and Vitamin Technology and Pharmacology, but it was after reading Pearson and Shaw’s book, Life Extension, in 1986 that he became actively involved in antiaging medicine and committed to the field of preventative medicine. Phil believes that we all have to recognise that the deleterious affects of aging are inextricably linked to degenerative diseases. Phil is the editor of the International Antiaging Magazine, co-writer of the New Millennium Guide to Anti-Aging Medicine, Director of Research and Development for Inner-Age (researching biological aging measurement to assist in the creation of a scientific tool to measure aging and the performance of preventative medicine itself), and Pharmacist at International Antiaging Systems, helping to answer specific questions relating to the use of cutting-edge medicines and nutrition, in particular the use of Nootropic substances.

In his presentation Phil will:

-introduce key nootropic substances, (the so-called smart drugs) and their effectiveness on mental facilities for the aging individual.
-look at several substances in detail, (in particular piracetam, deprenyl, hydergine, centrophenoxine, acetyl-L-carnitine, vasopressin, phosphatidylserine and vinpocetine), presenting their known individual actions on the brain and how this has benefited memory, learning, focus and attention etc.
-highlight how some of these substances have dramatically extended animal lifespan with possible implications for humans, and also how this indicates that the control centers for aging lie in the brain.

WHERE & WHEN

We will be at the Penderel's Oak (see below for the address) from 12 noon for lunch before the presentation, and afterwards for drinks and conversation. If it's your first time at an ExtroBritannia event, look out for a copy of Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" at our table (picture http://www.falk-henr...er/0spirit.jpg)

The presentation will take place at Conway Hall (nearby, see below for details) where we have hired the Bertrand Russel room
