It's used as a sweetener in throat tablets, chewing gum, coca cola light etc.. I've heard many people saying how toxic it is and that it is strange that it's allowed to be used so widely in foods, sweets etc. another Substance used for sweetening are sorbitol, maybe that one is interesting to speak about too..
With todays low calories campaigns and weight loss programs sweeteners tend to become a popular substitute for sugar. Most sport nutrition contains sweeteners, and lots of "classic" products appear on markets with a new recipy excluding sugar. How can this possibly affect people in the long run?
Your thoughts? I'll search for some articles regarding this and paste them in here asap.

Most artifical sweeteners may have negative effects on health, although they may be mild, and if you eat a lot of sugar you may be better off with artificial sweeters. Try to get stuff sweetended with sucralose/splenda - it is the safest, by far, and it tastes exactly like sugar

Why isn't that sweetener standard then? if it's safer I mean. More expensive?

I once had a doctor tell me that the only way sugar could harm me was if the truck carrying it ran over me. I mean, isn't it made out of a plant?

Exactly, more expensive. And most people are complacent, they figure if it's FDA approved it's safe.

Krist, that's a lot.. maybe you should try green tea (hot) to substitute for the caffeine.. there's much more benefit from anti-oxidant there with the more organic tea... try a china shop for the actual leaves.. rather than the more processed..

Thanks BJKlein, thats a good idea. I've tried to just start drinking water before, but that didn't last long. Maybe the grean tea will work because of the caffeine.

"Are you being serious?"

Kind of, but not completely. I can remember when offal was considered to be good for you, (you know, liver, brains, tripe) as well as eating lots of carbs. Things only change when people decide to do the research. Epidemiology is such fun!

Living 3.5 mins walk from sugar cane fields might have something to do with it too. I particularly like grabbing a stalk of cane and peeling it to chew on the yummy bit inside, just don't tell the farmer, please, he looks mean. I have often wondered why it isn't marketed like this, squeezed straight from the stalk and into a bottle, no artificial anything.

Buggered if I'll eat anything concocted in a lab! Aspartamine! Sounds like something you would use to start a racing motor!

I've been researching this a bit lately, and I think the best low-cal sweetener is the sugar alcohol, erythritol . It has 0.2 calories a gram, is a natural nutritive sweetener, and doesn't cause digestive problems and "anal leakage" (which is no fun, let me tell you!). It's a bit expensive, but if you can afford it, I think it is the way to go. $9 from netrition.com (http://www.netrition...ritol_page.html).

Naturally occuring does not mean good for you. Cyanide is naturally occuring, as are millions of other toxins. On the other hand many life extension drugs are not naturally occuring.

Found this little titbit, thought it might be worthy of contribution, it's all about carbs and sugar and stuff.

This was the bit that has me worried, I do likes me shoogah. And me hips is me problem.

"At the same time, some scientists argue that refined carbohydrates like white sugar, white rice and processed cereals raise insulin levels. In turn, this leads to overeating and storage of excess fat at the waist and hips."

Eeeek! Think I'll choose a mango instead.........
