What brands and from where do you get these superoods?

I am currently taking (eating) Jarrow brand chlorella and Nutrex spirulina from luckyvitamin.com

I have to say I'm a bit dissapointed with Nutrex. It is no better (maybe not as good) as the Pure Planet brand I just got finished with. I think from now on I will either buy NOW brand in 4 lb jugs (cheap, about 17 bucks a pound) or possibly a bulk herbal store like herbalcom.com.

What are you guys favorite sources for these foods? Brands? Do you notice a difference between chlorella vulgaris or pyrenoidosa?

Thanks, and great board btw!

I consume 30+ grams of spirulina and chlorella a day. I buy the Jarrow forumlas 2.2pound container from lucky vitamin and the 4 pound NOW jug from them aswell.. I find that these are the best values in bulk. The NOW brand is cyanotech spirulina grown in Hawaii, I was in contact with the company not so long ago.. so it's the best Spirulina on earth and not some cheap stuff.

I found the Now Spirulina nasty tasting compared to EarthRise, but thats all preference, i would order small sizes of different kinds until you find one that tastes ok.

Wow! I hope you are frequently donating blood or taking a lot of IP6. Chlorella and spirulina are both extremely high in iron. To make things worse, you are consuming an outrageous amount. Reminds me somewhat of my father. I had to get on his ass to lay off the amount as well. You are ingesting a ton of iron there Paul. At the least I'd get yourself an iron test done ASAP. Make sure they do both tests. Iron and men don't go well together. Take care.

I take 30 grams plus of spirulina per day, also 10 grams of chlorella. Have been doing so for over 2 years and feel great. I donated blood about 6 months ago and my iron levels were right in the middle of the healthy range. I have now donated twice and will continue to do so every 3 months. Anyway in my experience higher doses of green products are fine. I would also count spirulina as the supplement that makes the most noticable difference in general well being and energy.

I use Jarrow yaeyama powder from i-herb, and the Australian brand "morlife" certified organic spirulina.

Just a personal preference, but I prefer my iron levels to stay are the bare minimum that my body requires to create RBCs.

Wow thanks guys. Very informative posts. I never thought about the high iron levels in these superfoods, the only thing that gave me pause at first was the high levels of beta carotene. Being an ex-smoker, it made me kind of hesitant, but hell, they make me feel SO good, I'm just not going to give them up.

Has anyone tried the Blue-Green Klamath algae?

Paul, looks like I had it right on with what I plan on ordering then. I might try out the spirulina from Beyond A Century....only 12 bucks a pound! Not from Hawaii, but hell, I am using the Nutrex spirulina now (Cyanotech's flagship, and the most expensive kind), and am very dissapointed in it compared to the other brands I have tried. So, cheapest is the way to go I think, and if I don't notice as much of a kick, then I'll just take more.

The reason I brought this thread up though, was I noticed the NOW chlorella has way different nutrition stats on the label than Jarrow or any other chlorella....it seems to have a lot more B12 for instance and BC. Just wondering what the deal is, I read that Jarrow is the best.

Wouldn't Chlorella also help to excrete the iron?

There is atleast one study which says otherwise.

Effect of chlorella on rats with iron deficient anemia.

Thanks Amara - is that what that study says? It's hard to tell - I can't look at the entire thing. Do you have a summary of results by any chance?

I take spirulina everyday before each meal, so 3 capsules. It has helped me a lot. I buy mine of a nutritional supplement company from Peru and they have been working really good.
