Okay, so, I have bugs in my house. The usual, you know, cockroaches, spiders, etc.

But what the f*** is this?

Attached File  Bug_004a.jpg   232.26KB   113 downloads

I saw it crawling across the living room floor in the dark, so I assumed it was a cockroach. However, after I lightly smashed it, I got a closer look, and all I could think was "gigantic ant" or "gigantic termite"!!!

But I've counted the legs, and it has 10 legs. Maybe the front pair are antennae, in which case it has 8 legs. Regardless, it is NOT an insect. But it doesn't look like any spider I've ever seen. So what the f*** IS it?

Here's a view from underneath:

For a sense of scale, its about the size of a quarter! I'm really freaking out, because I have a wife and three kids living in the house, and this thing looks like it could A) scare the living hell out of them, and B) leave a nasty bite wound.

Please, can someone help me figure out what this is?!?!?

If it helps with the process, here's another angle. The flash was on for this one, which explains the difference in shadows and glossiness:

Wow never seen something like it either. Weird stuff. You know google and some other comapanies are developing search engines that search for images based on an image you put there... too bad their engines aren't ready yet.

This looks like a combination of cockroach and ant. And spider. lol. But well no surprise you got a bug festival in your house. Isn't that spaghetti all over the floor?

Here's that last shot again, reduced 50% instead of 25% (i.e., it's twice as big). I cropped it to just the bug:

And here's the head, at the full resolution of my camera:

Actually, that's the stove top, not the floor, but yeah, we're not surprised by bugs. Just the ones from B-movie horror flicks.

Hi Jay,

I also have no idea, and I am usually pretty good at identifying plant and animal species.

If I were you I would find out the email addresses of a couple of entomologists and send them an email with these images attached.

Maybe a Wind Scorpion??? (I have no idea)

These are related to both spiders and scorpions but are not venomous. They feed on small creatures like their relatives as well as cockroaches. Similar to the Jerusalem Cricket.

I thought it was sorta like a jerusalem cricket at first, but I found this pic that matched it better?

It look pretty freaking crazy! I thought it was a mutated bug at first :|?

It reminds me of video clip on the net. I heard bug fighting is very popular in Japan

Wow, Hedgehog FTW! I was going to say some sort of tarantula. Nice to know that it's not harmful, eh? Other than the fact that it might scare someone to death.

Ah i love bug fights. Especially the ones with scorpions involved, although, unfortunately for the scorpions, their poison takes some time to kick in, and often they are killed before their poison K.O.s the opponent. I think we should call it a draw? Or maybe the other insect won since he did stand for a bit longer than the scorpion? Anyways, bug fights are amazing. And i feel no remorse in seeing them suffer since i hate all bugs.

Already got one:
http://www.imminst.org/wiki

Not sure if the pages are still editable (you might have to be logged into an account you create to edit). We had major problems with spam bot vandalisms for awhile on there, so they made it at least slightly harder (I think it was impossible for awhile) to edit.

I wish bugs did not exist...both in software and in nature. I know it would mess up the food chain, but bugs really creep me out.

Thanks, Hedgehog. That's definitely the same bug.

From the wikipedia page:

Due to their bizarre appearance many people are startled or even afraid of them.

I can vouch for the afraid part. I've been creeped out all evening! Knowing what it is makes me feel a little better, but I'm still probably going to have creepy, scary dreams about these things.

I realize it was months ago that all this went down, but here's a picture of some camel spiders... very big ones. Supposedly they can grow to 6in. or more. No venom, but are often aggressive and the bites can get infected. I saw some really nasty pictures when checking around on the net.

And I second the hating bugs sentiment. I wouldn't really call it a fear, more of a disgust, but I don't want these things anywhere near me.
