Interesting. Biphasic sleeping is the ideal for us, but unfortunately the way society is organized makes it hard for us to sleep for more than 90mins throghout the day. A switch from monophasic to biphasic sleep could save us one or two hour of sleep per day making us only need some 6 hours.

There aren't to many people in todays society that can stop and have a sleep at 1pm or 3pm. Especially a sleep that involves lying down. The only people that can freely do this are people that work from home or have their own business where they set the rules.

Naps never work for me. Takes me about an hour to get to sleep. That turns a 20 minute nap into an hour and 20 minutes.

I follow a biphasic sleep routine. My core nap is often (although it can vary) from 3-6am. This is followed by an hour and a half nap usually early evening.
I am very strict with keeping my sleep in increments of 90 minutes, as this is the duration of one complete cycle.

or live in a society that allows the mid arvo siesta. but most industrialised countries have abandoned the siesta.
a study was commissioned by the Greek government sometime in 80s or 90s (sorry can't remember the decade or the name of which study) which wanted to determine why the general populace had a low rate of heart disease. the researchers determined it was the afternoon power nap. back then, businesses opened at 10am or 11am and shut shop roughly 3pm and then reopened at 6pm or 7pm to close at 10pm. the irony behind this was that the government wanted to get into line with EU policy of normalising working hours from 9am - 5pm etc. the government didn't like the results of the study or the populace being told to open in the morning and close late afternoon.
funny that....

I read this somewhere, I forget where as I read so much stuff. The technique was called a caffeine power nap. Basically when you are ready to take the nap you down a couple shots of expresso or a cup of coffee (add some ice so you dont scald your throat when you chug it
). The idea is that when the coffee hits your bloodstream (30 ish minutes later) it acts as a natural alarm that wakes you up, it also due to the release of catecholamines combined with the power nap makes your body more refreshed and revived then either the nap or the coffee alone. I am sure the same thing could be done with Modafinil or whatever your stimulant of choice is.
I have tried this with coffee and it really does work, a bit unorthodox but very effective.
