i noticed BN started selling DMG (Dimethylglycine)
i know that TMG loses a methyl group and becomes DMG but is there any supplemental difference between them? do they do the samething?

(digging up an old unanswered thread)

It is my understanding that DMG is much more expensive. It may be harder to synthesize or extract, but I suspect that the price increase is due to its entry into the athletic performance enhancing market. Athletes pay big money for placebo effects. It would make sense that TMG is a stronger methyl doner for neurotransmitter synthesis, but I don't know of any studies to conclude this statement. I do know that many people report TMG as a motivator and mood lifter.

having used both dmg and tmg, i felt like i get better effects from tmg. and tmg has the extra benefit of being cheaper.

There's 2 ways of recycling homocysteine to methionine in the body. The "major" pathway uses 5-MTHF to donate the methyl group, and also involves B12 and is carried out by the enzyme methionine synthase. The minor pathway or backdoor uses TMG to donate the methyl group, and is done by the enzyme BHMT.

Unfortunately the major pathway can have problems, especially during chronic illness. So the simpler way to reduce homocysteine(which has negative effects) is to take TMG promoting the backdoor. This is mostly a temporary solution as the major pathway has other useful byproducts.

DMG on the other hand is a byproduct of the minor/BHMT pathway, and taking DMG will likely result in suppressing it.

So TMG and DMG have opposite effects although they're similar.
