A couple weeks back, I took 300 mg of Bocapa (1 pill) in the late afternoon (after work) for five consecutive days in a row. I had never taken this herb before. I had high hopes for it given the relatively few reported side effects combined with the potential benefits.

The most common side effects mentioned are high urinary frequency, thirst, and mild headache. Of the mentioned side effects, only an increase in urinary frequency seemed to apply to me. However, there were other side effects I experienced that I find to be a bit more disturbing, so I thought I would mention them in the event someone else has also experienced them.

All of these extra side effects have occurred only during the span of the 5 evenings I have taken Bacopa. I have never experienced anything close to these side effects before, or after I discontinued use. It’s possible that in my particular situation, I was experiencing some sort of an allergic reaction.

The worst experience occurred during sleep, and it happened on two occasions. I will awaken from an unpleasant dream of being bitten all over my body by biting insects. I awake ostensibly as a consequence of having to relieve my bladder. Once “awake” the dream of course fades, but the prickly/biting skin sensation does not go away!

This feeling is difficult to describe, but it is not unlike the sensation of being bitten by a particularly nasty mosquito, or perhaps by a very small deer fly. The sensation is strong enough to cause me to want to rub the area where the sensation occurred. Usually this biting sensation will be occurring simultaneously all over my body. Nevertheless, I am able to fall back asleep, and in the morning the sensation does not return (until the next night following another dose).

During the five day period I took the herb, I would only take it around 4 pm in the afternoon. During the afternoon hours, the only effects I noticed were a tired sensation, and/or a dulling of my senses, and sometimes, irritability was also present. I do not take anything else with it, or for that matter anything else within several hours of ingestion beforehand, and nothing afterwards.

Upon awaking, I feel exhausted, as if I had worked my muscles out hard all night long. My mind feels dulled, and unfocused. I also notice a slight muscle twitch of my fingers from time to time.

Twenty-four hours after stopping the herb, all side effects disappeared.

Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this while using Bacopa?

LD

Bacopa for me is a godsend. It makes me feel on top of the world, somewhat like a narcotic buzz without the buzz so to speak.

I think you two just are not compatible with bacopa. Everyone is different. Don't get the idea that the herb is bad. It is like saying lobster is bad because you are allergic to it, but it really isn't.

I think you did the right thing be ceasing further use. I really is a no-brainer. Just don't take it as simple as that.

I would definitely try lowering the dosage before 'giving up' on Bacopa permanently. There's not many things out there that improve cognition, are relaxing, and ment to be beneficial in the long term and Bacopa is one. Just learn to use it in a way that your body can hadle it.

Try 150 mg once a day with food. If that still makes you guys sick, try even less. If it is a capsule you are taking, just empty half of it onto a teaspoon or just into some drink. If it is a tablet, obviously just cut it in half.

I had the experience too of being sick a few times because of taking too much Bacopa. I live in Australia and the brands here mention the full amount of herb on the labelling (like 6 grams in the Herbs of Gold tablet I take!). You guys would have Bacopa 'extract' on your labelling - I am not sure what 6 grams is equivalent to though.

Anyway I break my tablet in halves and have one half with breakfast and one half with lunch. I have found it a useful nootropic definitely as an add on in a stack - it seems to help with memory and generally seems to improve cognition. I take quite a few stimulating substances with it (like Thiamine megadoses, B-Complex, Gingko Biloba, Green Tea) so I never really get a tiredness effect from it either. Plus Bacopa is said to be safe/possibly beneficial for brain health and works very consistently for me (though, of course, it is subtle)...

You could also try changing brands - there may be something you are sensitive to in the tablet/capsule of the brand you are taking.

Good thoughts - thanks! I have 300 mg capsules, so I'll try taking half the dosage and see what happens. If I recall correctly, the first couple days of usage (at 300 mg) I had limited negative side effects. It wasn't until the 4th and 5th days that the problems seemed to really start. If I still have problems with half the dosage, I'll try another brand, and follow that lead.

If he had a bad allergic reaction to the normal dosage of bacopa, it would be dumb to advise him to try a lower dose.

It's like telling someone who is allergic to chocolate to just eat a 'little' bit because it is good for you. Or lobster or peanut butter what have you!!!

Just don't take it at all. Some people are even slightly allergic to gluten, and it manifests itself through little nuisances which get worse and worse. Simple put, your body is constantly being under attack when there is an allergen present in the bloodstream. This isn't good for the body.

Obviously Visionary doesn't know a thing about biology or the body systems and how they work. An allergen is an allergen regardless of what quantity it is present in. A little is bad and a lot is worse!

No need to get personal luv2increase.
After looking at it again, Conanld's was potentially a much more serious reaction to Bacopa than I thought.

My experiences with taking lower dosages (that have now worked for me consistently for years) was after having the nausea and mild headaches when taking too much Bacopa - which sounds similar to Advanc3d's experiences. Advanc3d might get something better out of lessening and/or dividing up the dosage.

But I think Conanld would probably be better off stopping the herb entirely as like luv2increase says, an allergen is an allergen and best not to tempt fate!

I tried one additional half dose at 150mg (after being off of it for some time), and two or three hours later, the the terrible thumb and finger twitching came back, so I am off of Bacopa for good now. About 16 hours after ingestion, the twitching finally began to abate.

That was the other problem I could never get around. Bacopa seemed to simultaneously cause brain fog, lethargy, and yet some excitability too. If I took it during the day, I felt like I was functioning under water, so to speak. If I took it at night, the excitability aspect of it prevented me from sleeping well. Of course in my case, the allergic reaction might have played a role in part of that.

I have been taking the paradise herb brand and have been noticing nausea, stomach discomfort, and brain fog/headache, and trouble goinG to sleep. This brand definately has a high concentration (5000mg and 50% standardized). What brand would you guys recommend for a sensitive mind and body (Himalaya, planetary herbals, or thorne research, etc)?

Other supplements I currently take:
MBS rhodiola rosea
rainbow light men's one multivitamin
apple cider vinegar
