Hello all,

This is my first post here and I'd like to share my experiences of taking resveratrol over the past couple of years, focussing, in particular on the last few months since I upped my dose.
In short, I take NSI's Longevatrol. Took a single capsule a day for a little over 1.5 years; noticed perhaps a little more alertness, energy, skin health, general well-being. I do, however also take daily Carnosine, Synergy tabs (also NSI - recommend), berry extract, curcumin, saw palmetto, omega 3s & extra virgin olive oil, so these may be contributory.
However, 2 months ago upped my dose to 2 capsules a day yielding 100mg Res. Have noticed a definate increase in sex drive, alertness, overall restlessness, assertiveness and aggression.
It sounds mostly good, but I'm a university lecturer and have found the above effects unsuitable to a job researching at a desk most of the day. I work out regularly and have been going running in an attempt to use up some of this energy. As an experiment, for the past week I tried taking 3 caps a day (yielding 150mg resveratrol) and have been struggling to keep myself calm and controlled; my mind feels really focussed and I've never been in better shape, but I get bored v quickly and have to be doing smething all the time; it's a little like being a teenager again (I'm early 30s) which is not altogether comfortable!
Anyone else had experiences like this; I'd really appreciate hearing of similar stories as I'm thinking of cutting my dose.
Thanks.

Most people who have noticeable side effects taking resveratrol are taking something other than pure (98-99%) resveratrol. The effects of resveratrol should be very mild. In your case, you are taking a very small amount in a form that I would suspect has poor bioavailability so there is probably something else at work here. I take 2 grams of 99% pure resveratrol and mix with yogurt daily and I notice nothing except perhaps a slight increase in libido but it's too difficult to tell if it is a placebo effect.

When you take a pill with several ingredients, you can never be sure which one is causing your side effects.

I agree with DaffyDuck. Your side effects are consistent with the impurity fraction in typical 50% resveratrol. Switch to 98% or better and you side effects will likely disappear entirely.

Thanks for the replies. The supplement I take lists polygonum cuspidatum 100mg (standardised to 50% resveratrol leaf) and red wine extract 100mg (standardised to 40% polyphenols) per capsule; so the res leaf would possibly not be the pure form you mentioned? What is the impurity fraction?
And 3 capsules a day would constitute a fairly substantial dose, wouldn't it, considering the tiny amounts of Res found in natural food sources (peanuts, grapes, wine etc)?
But I get that Daffy is taking mega-doses of the stuff & reports no extreme side effects, so I'll perhaps shop around for a purer source of trans resveratrol.
Any recommendations?

One of the sticky threads has a price list. If you are going for value, 98%-99% standard (not micronized) powder is your best bet. Preferebly, you want a source with regular testing in the US and a report of analysis that shows a purity within expectations. There's another sticky thread that looks at ways to increase the bioavailability of the powder. The easiest to maintain would be mixing with yogurt or milk. The theory is that the resveratrol loosely binds to the milk proteins. Some add a small amount of miralax which helps get the hydrophobic powder into suspension. You can micronize it yourself by dissolving it in a small amount of everclear.
