Fredrik, Thank you for posting this very nice summary.

Now, Paula's Choice (hideous name of the line notwithstanding) has recently introduced a s/s I'm considering:

PC Sunscreen Spray Lotion spf 55:

Active Ingredients: Homosalate 10%, Oxybenzone 6%, Octisalate 5%, Avobenzone 3%, Octocrylene 2% (all FDA-approved sunscreen ingredients). Other Ingredients: Water, Butylene Glycol (slip agent), PEG-8, Polyethylene (thickeners), Dimethicone (silicone slip agent), Titanium Dioxide (thickener/opacifying agent), Bentonite (absorbent), Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (vitamin-based antioxidants), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (water-binding agent), Picea Excelsa (Spruce) Wood Extract (anti-inflammatory agent), Sodium Polyacrylate, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer (film-forming/waterproofing agents), Lauryl Glucoside (wetting agent), Ethylhexylglycerin (water-binding agent), Disodium EDTA (chelating agent), Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin (preservatives), Sodium Hydroxide (pH adjuster).

Do you think it's worth a go? Right now, I'm using Bioderma max fluide 50+ - I'm fair enough that the sheer whiteness it provides merely serves to even out my skintone. Neutrogena's AgeShield Face (with Helioplex) spf 55 burns my skin like nothing else. ROC Minesol velvet lotion spf 40 is absolutely lovely, but too emollient for me here in the Tropics. Sorry, I'm starting to ramble here a la "sunscreens I have known, tolerated and would have discarded but for the outrageou$ price tag."

The PC spray retails for USD$15.95 with $3 s/h in October. (For completeness' sake, I've no affiliation with PBegoun, her products or websites, etc., blah, yada, etc.)

Any and all thoughts are, as always, most appreciated. :)

Best, M (edit to correct spf values)

Hi,
well the avobenzone is stabilized by octocrylene and its got a stable vitamin C derivative (SAP) but I would try the new La Roche-posay fluide SPF 30 AC or the extreme fluide SPF 50+ instead. The AC is made especially for oily skin or humid climate. These "fluide", pardon my french, formulations feels like sprays since they contain alcohol. I like these formulas because they´re pretty light going on, not very whitening and they contain three UVA filters (Mexoryl SX + XL + Tinosorb S), several UVB-filters + a botanical extract that is supposed to protect from some DNA-damage.

The only sunscreens I can use in my eye area without stinging is 100% zinc + titanium dioxide formulas or the LRP fragrance free cream SPF 50+. I use the latter.

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestions. My skin is a little (ahem) touchy now that I'm on retinoids, so I've been avoiding the alcohol containing LRPs. I do have the 30AC and the new 50+ on hand though, so I'll rotate them in and see how I react. I have to be very careful around my eyes as well (I've been using a Neutrogena titanium dioxide 9.5% concealer) - I'll look into the LRP cream, and shall forego the PC.

Oh! Btw I found Heliocare (new formulation sans beta-carotene exp 2010) on eBay for US$26+free s/h per 60 caps. Bought a couple. Thanks again. :)

Best, MK
