Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the potential for open source to aid in the development of space exploration technology. There is already a team competing for the Google Lunar X Prize that is using an open source approach. Their name is Team FREDNET http://www.frednet.com/

If they get enough publicity, I think they can be a serious competitor. They are accepting collaboration from people all over the world through the internet.

Couldn't find a good spot for this story, didn't want to start a new thread, so here goes: Page, Cameron, Perot, et al plan to announce a new space venture on April 24th. Perhaps Asteroid Mining? I am glad these somewhat older (and rich) fellows are pushing for human space exploration. Younger generations have nearly completely lost the curiosity and drive for space exploration in favor of virtual exploration (which is very exciting and entertaining, as well) but of course leaves humans as a species very vulnerable....sitting on one small rock in space
