I started taking magnesium a week ago. I hope it will have an calming and muscle relaxant effect. I know in stressed periods body needs more magnesium but ı have a question may magnesium may have an effect to make you more resistent to stress and make you feel stronger? Any thoughts on any substances to make you feel stronger?

I take magnesium loads, used to get irregular heart beats and it feeling like it's difficult to breathe, chest tightness, when I take it I can breathe deeply without any effort.

I tend to take it at night as I find it makes be a bit tired in the day (part or the zma I take) or after heavy nights out on the beer. Definately helps to calm me down. I do take it in the day though if I notice the signs again, like if i've had too much caffiene and feeling overly stimulated it definately balances this out, and i'd take the tiredness over the anxiety and heart palpitations any day.

I'd consider just taking it as part of a zma supplement, the zinc and b6 will make you feel stonger too, body builders take this alot at night to boost testosterone and reduce over training. Also helps with sleep.

I can definately tell when I haven't taken it for a few days.

The Aspartate in ZMA makes me not sleep very well.

I prefer a different source of Zinc. (Zinc Monomethionate)

I take 250 mg of magnesium about 3 times a week. My belief is it helps your heart. My doctor says you don't need to supplement magnesium because you get enough in your diet. I don't think he knows much about dietary requirements.

He told me I don't need vitamin D too.

thanks for all the replies. I think we can say that magnesium has a calming effect but I want to learn if the effect is cumulative or instantly? Do you have any idea?

Can feel it within the hour after taking it depending on if you've eaten or not, best time is advised an hour before bed for that reason. Not really a cumulative effect at all. i.e. what ever you feel from taking it, won't get any different as time goes buy if you keep taking it.

Thanks, I would like the effects to be cumulative. Another thing I started using is chamomile tea. It's calming effects are said to be cumulative.

Is there a reason why you're planning to take large amounts of Mg ?

You might have GI issues with excess magnesium.

Long term, you might feel lethargic and sleepy.
But supplementing with some calcium with help that.

Not as long as your near a toilet....the shits!

500mg is plenty though, you don't need anymore than that at one time.

That's only 100mg over the RDA, right? If you took it as the oxide, you wouldn't even be absorbing the RDA, assuming a magnesium-free diet. (Which isn't that hard to imagine...)

I take 1.2 grams magnesium per day but I have an intractable magnesium deficiency...i.e. my kidneys keep flushing the damn thing out! From what I read, the only way to achieve a magnesium toxicity is if you have kidney failure. Otherwise, any excess is excreted.
