With studies like this I always wonder whether the longevity effect is really due to exercise or the fact that people who exercise also tend to eat healthy.
Many of the health aficionados I have interviewed on the Sunday Evening Update have asked the same question. One thing that has emerged is a loose consensus that mixed exercise (sports, resistance, aerobic) is better than repetitive running/jogging/treadmill type stuff. There is probably a significant longevity benefit to the repetitive exercise but it can damage your joints.

This is what I've always heard and it only makes sense too. Bicycling, swimming, and gymnastic type exercises have to be much healthier for you than running. There is probably a significant longevity benefit to the repetitive exercise but it can damage your joints.

Yeah, I have read a study showing long distance runners have less joint pain and injuries later in life than do more sedentary folk. While I am inclined to believe that much of the common wisdom about running causing joint damage stems from untrained people over training, Mixing up excercise is a good idea. Right now I do a good mix of running, swimming, and resistance.
