Hello all,

I normally get my vitamin A from whatever veggies I eat + multivitamin, but I had a bad experience with AOR Multi-Basics recently, where I ended up getting nauseous after taking it. I thought it was perhaps just a weird stomach thing, but then I smelled the bottle, and it smelled really fishy/rotten... like something was bad. I don't know if it was a bad batch, or what exactly, but I am looking for alternatives.

I'm considering either a different multi, or simply supplementing with whatever vitamins are lacking in my diet.

For vitamin A, I am considering: Jarrow CarotenALL, which provides 2583 IU per gel, Green Foods Carrot Essence, or simply going with a small amount of carrot juice daily, or eating a carrot or two.

The latter option probably is healthiest, but I admit I can't stand the taste of carrots. Juice may be more palatable, if I mask it with something, but then there is the sugar issue.

How about Green Foods Carrot Essence? http://www.iherb.com...c...d=3654&at=1

Is the company considered decent? It could be a good thing to just put a teaspoon in my berry/oat shake daily.

Or I could just go with CarontenALL instead... or find a different multi...

beta carotene is very easy to get from food... no point in supplementing it separately.

im surprised to hear that about the AOR multi. I would give them a call and have them send you another bottle.

Thanks for the reply.

And yeah, it was odd about the AOR Multi. I've taken it in the past with no problems. And even this bottle seemed okay, up until about the last 3rd of the bottle. I get it shipped from Canada, so perhaps it was stored improperly before being sent to me or something. Or the batch was bad. I didn't think of contacting AOR about it -- worth a try, maybe they'll send me a replacement.

I also didn't realize beta carotene was in so many foods. Although out of vegetables, the main one I would get it from would be spinach. But I still would like to get the health benefits of carrots (a nice range of carotenoids), but... without actually having to taste them. It's one of those vegetables, along with peas, that I simply can't stand the taste of. I wonder if it's due to having been forced to eat mushy canned peas and carrots as a kid.

So would it be worthwhile to use something like a carrot powder product, and mix it in with berries/oats to kill the taste? Or should I just get by with spinach/whatever else I eat?

I've also looked for a replacement multi, instead of AOR, but am having trouble there. It seems most multis go overboard... way too much Alpha E, A, Bs, selenium. It's weird how 400IU of alpha E, or 200 mcg of selenium, is considered 'healthy' in most of the multis, and from what are considered reputable companies. I ended up looking at children's multis, just to find something that doesn't go over the RDA levels.

v8 splash is carrot based and doesn't taste like carrots.. has 100% vit A per 8oz. im sure you could find a lot of juices like that.

Yeah, but the way they make it taste non-carroty is to load it with sugar. I remember checking the ingredients on splash once.... after water, the second ingredient was High fructose corn syrup. Perhaps they have some sucrolose versions too, but I somehow don't think V8 Splash would be the healthiest option really.

It's a shame you don't like carrots. I get my vitamin A from the weekly 16oz bottle of carrot juice I buy from Trader Joe's.

For me, the mixture of Odwalla carrot juice and regular V8 is more palatable than either alone.

I'm considering trying some carrot juice mixed in with berries and oats. I figure the berry/oats should kill the carrot taste (I hope). Or it'll end up disgusting...

And unfortunately I don't like sweet potato or peppers either. I'm mostly a green vegetable person. I like bland vegetables (lettuces, baby spinach). Although I force myself to eat broccoli too.

The people who make that carrot essence supplement I mentioned above is also sending me some free samples to try out. Maybe dried carrot powder with oats/berries will be more palatable for me. I think they also make green magma, which I never tried, but hopefully they are somewhat reputable as supplement-makers go.

Red palm oil has 15 times the concentration of carotenes as carrots, and is "the highest plant souce of provitamin A carotenoids."
