For those looking at the anti-cancer efficacy of different forms of selenium might be interested in the following: http://www.ncbi.nlm....pubmed/18310093

It shows that methylselenocysteine shows greater anti-cancer effect than sodium selenite and selenomethionine, and also avoids the potential toxicity of selenite.

In summary, our data demonstrated superior in vivo growth inhibitory efficacy of MSeA over SeMet and selenite, against two human PCa xenograft models without the genotoxic property of selenite.

And what is about the toxicity of SeMet (selenomethionin)? Isn't it toxic too?

SeMc is the least toxic form of all the selenium compounds. Also, the dose needed is the lowest of all forms. That said, people that use other forms might be pleased by this finding:

Personally, I only use the SeMC form, at 45mcg per day.

AOR has a great article on selenium. Look for it on their site.

Interesting - do you have a link to any papers on dosing levels for the different forms of selenium?

I too initially thought that Se-MSC was more potent than sodium
selenite at a far lower toxicity :

Mmmm. Did you note the date of the paper that I referenced? It's more recent than the paper by Drake. I'd still be interested in any references to dosing for SeMet vs Selenite.

I take the selenomethionine form, 200 mcg a day (as part of my NOW Adam multi). This dose of this particular form of selenium has been shown in studies to have anti-HIV effect, and that's the reason I take it. The fact that the NOW multi has it is one of the key reasons that I chose that multi vs another. One less separate selenium pill to take.
