I've been lacto-ovo-pesci-vegetarian since March, and since then have tried true veganism and a raw foods diet. Now I occasionally eat eggs, cheese, and trout or salmon. I had been trying to supplement a lack of protein with more vegetables or simply with rice protein. I've been taking lots of whey protein for the last few days and have noticed a huge increase in my focus, calmness, and overall health. I think my new diet has simply been lacking an easily digested protein source, which has left me feeling malnourished, moreso than any vitamin or mineral deficiency. Over the past few days I've also removed candy from my diet. It normally gives me a brief cognitive boost, but then just drives me down. I've heard that when a high sugar food is consumed, the pancreas secretes insulin, which pulls glucose out of the body and brain for storage. Could protein supplementation increase the amount of glucose in my brain for energy? Has anyone else noticed such a strong cognitive effect just from pure protein?

the vegan diet (unless strictly planned) and the raw foods diet (no matter what) is inherently deficient in good sources of protein. if you're noticing a boost in cognition from protein, my guess would be you're just not getting enough. it is, imo, extremely important to include eggs and dairy in the vegetarian diet (and i say that a vegetarian and a nutrition major)

I'd keep on eating that Protein then man... Interesting thing though... A while back I started taking Fish Oil, and I noticed the same thing... It's weird to explain though. More focus, my memory worked better, it was pretty cool.
