I couldn't find any information about Resveratrol and possible side effects in conjunction with Gabapentin. I am on high doses (3,300 mg/day) of Gabapentin for Trigeminal Neuralgia, which was triggered by an Acoustic Neuroma tumor that was large enough, if removed, to cause permanent Palsy on the left side of my face. I instead chose to have radiation to arrest the growth of the tumor, which it did. However, a number of years later, due to what the neurosurgeons believe is the stress on the Trigeminal Nerve being stretched over the tumor, I developed a severe case of Trigeminal Neuralgia. I have had great success with Gabapentin, but since starting to take Resveratrol about four weeks ago, I have started to experience slight breakthrough twinges of what previously have been early signs of the recurrence of the TN. Gabapentin is a nerve block that was originally developed to treat Epilepsy. One of the only supplements that seems to have been identified that impairs Gabapentin is Magnesium, which fights with the Gabapentin for attention from the same brain receptors. I am wondering if there is any indication that Resveratrol might in some way adversely interact with Gabapentin. I am stopping the Gabapentin today to see if there is any lessening in my symptoms over the next week or so. Thanks in advance for any return information.

Resveratrol can restore nerve function in some situations: Spinal nerve ligation reduces nitric oxide synthase activity and expression: Effect of resveratrol
Resveratrol restores nitric oxide synthase activity,

gabapentin inhibited an increase in NOS activity in this study: Gabapentin Blocks L-Type and P/Q-Type Ca2+ Channels Involved in Depolarization-Stimulated Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity in Primary Cultures of Neurons from Mouse Cerebral Cortex

It seems possible that resveratrol is counteracting the nerve pain-deadening effect of Gabapentin if Gabapentin's effect is mediated by Nitric Oxide Synthase. If this is the case I would expect your pain to continue with reseratrol alone.

I take a new liquid Resveratrol formulation that has been giving me some good results...so much so that I decided to market it. I don't know if it will work for others like it has for me, but it is the only all-natural supplement that was formulated by Dr David Sinclair. It is new to the market as of August 8th, 2008. If you know anyone that would like to know about a product like that then please forward this link to them http://www.spam.com and I'll make sure that they get a 15% discount just for trying it :)

Regards,

Jason

I want to thank you for your very helpful response. I thought I would give an update on my issue with experiencing Trigeminal Neuralgia pain after I started resveratrol. I stopped taking the resveratrol on Dec. 2, the day I sent out my original post. Since then, the pain has subsided, and I now have no pain at all.

I am glad your pain is gone. I wonder if rf ablation of the nerve might be a better treatment for pain such as yours? Check with your pain management doctor. It might be possible to do without neurontin if that's the case. I found neurontin also affected my sense of balance too much to use on a regular basis. If you are having good results with it though, your doctor would be unlikely to want to try something else. But sometimes the effects of an ablation are permanent pain relief.

We do seem to have confirmation that resveratrol restore nerve function, given your experience. This suggests it could be worth exploring for some conditions involving nerve damage or even paralysis.
