My mom recently started taking fish oil, but ran into a problem with fish burps. She started with Nordic Naturals, which gave her a lemony burp, which she wasn't so fond of. She then tried an unflavored fish oil, and got fishier burps, which she really wasn't fond of.

So... what alternatives do people recommend?

I considered suggesting Coromega for her, but then read that it uses sodium benzoate + ascorbic acid in the ingredients, and remembered that article a while back about benzene. So that one doesn't sound so good. I wonder why they continue using sodium benzoate anyway?

I could recommend to her an enteric coated capsule, but she may not like the fact they can be a bit tough (ie hard shell) to swallow. Or I could suggest another flavored variety.

Leading candidates: Minami Marinepa (strawberry flavor), Fisol (enteric coated) or a Meg-3 enteric coated variety, like they sell at Costco.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

You could get one which has the triglyceride form of fish oil.
The triglyceride form gives fewer burps, and is better absorbed.

Thanks for the reply, but the Nordic Naturals product she used previously was the triglyceride form, but she still burped from it. The Minami product I listed is also triglyceride, but with flavoring (orange or strawberry... I forget which). I'm hesitant to recommend an unflavored brand to her.

I'm also not sure if better absorbed = less burps, or more.

Have you considered flax seed?

I mentioned flax seed to her once before, but she asked her doctor about it (and fish oil) and he recommended the fish oil instead. I think the omega 3s from fish oil have shown a much greater benefit for heart health, compared to flax. Although she just wants to take a smallish dose anyway, for general health. I suppose krill oil would be another alternative, but I don't think I can convince her to take krill pills.

Perhaps she can cover the burp with a smellier less offensive smell. Does she like onions? Have her follow here fish oil with a salad or something with onions. Then she'll enjoy onion burps.

make sure shes taking them 1/2 way through a large meal... that should reduce/prevent burps in and of itself.

if you have the money, use ultimate omega from nordic naturals... i have -never- heard anyone complain of burps from it and ive recommended it to hundreds of people over the past few years.

if that is too expensive, try natures way super fisol (super, not regular) or now ultra omega 3 which are both reasonably priced, good quality & enteric coated (no burps)

Thanks for the reply. Taking the fish oil 1/2 way through a meal is a good idea.

She did try the lower strength Nordic Naturals (liquid), and got burps from it, but at least they were lemony. I expect she may get burps from the higher concentrate, but maybe not.

I've used both Nordic Ultimate and Fisol in the past. Nordic Ultimate Omega was the first fish oil I ever used, and oddly enough, I did get burps from it. Although after several months the burps went away. Now, I never get burps, even after I unintentionally took rancid fish oil.

Do you happen to know if Super Fisol uses the same coating as regular Fisol does? My hesitation recommending that brand to her is the hardness of the capsule. I recall the Fisol caps being tough... like rock-hard tough... I almost choked on one, as it was like swallowing a small rock. But that was years ago, so maybe they changed their formulation since then.
