Assuming those experiments don't just measure psychological repression, he may be right about happiness. However, 'synthetic happiness' only works if happiness is the only thing you value. I, on the other hand, value freedom for its own sake. In fact, I'm not even sure to what extent I even want to be happy in absense of freedom. Maybe that's just me, though.

Feelings of freedom (personal, economic) correlate highly with feelings of happiness in happiness studies.
