I found it in the Spring 2009 issue of H+ Magazine:

Posted Image

This sends a wrong message from the perspective of cryonicists who want to integrate cryonics into medicine. Mainstream medicine doesn't offer you the opportunity to "relive your life differently."

"relive your life", sounds as if cryonics is time travel.

Some people are emphasizing too much on revival rather then what cryonics really is ... preservation.

IMO, cryonics should be viewed as (the best and ultimate) alternative to cremation and burial, not as a means of achieving immortality or "reliving your life differently" by future revival (even though that's what most people want, me included).

I know this ad is perhaps a little misleading if you really get literal about it. But I actually like the ad. I think it speaks to the ultimate goal of cryonics which to me is the part about reanimation when the science is good enough. It sparks the imagination and provokes interest which I think is a good thing. Whereas something like "avoid/postpone potential information-theoretic death" would leave a bit to be desired from popular imagination point of view. Good job Alcor for putting out an ad...

I like this ad. The small print explains what it's about. This kind of stuff appeals to the masses = good thing.

Yeah, but is there really a need to "appeal to the masses" in H+ magazine? ;)

I'd much prefer an ad that reads, "Cryonic - it's worth a shot."

The masses won't read H+ ; I searched right through it but couldn't find a
single article featuring Paris Hilton or Britney Spears...

Its ambitious and risque but so is the notion.

Bravo.

Alas, its pointless to wait for the medical community's endorsement as for that to happen you would need evidence based medical support to show cryonics works.

Ah, true. They should run this ad in a women's / men's magazine.

EDIT: Very interesting magazine, by the way. Haven't read this one before.

Reliving your life is the PERFECT angle for a certain market that makes up a large percentage of cryonicists, and I think that "advancedatheist" should be someone who really understands on a personal level why that angle should work.

For the record, I decline to donate money for this individual's cryosuspension if he winds up in a situation like Marce Johnson's

but truthfully, advancedAth, don't you wish you could get another shot at life, and this time, do it right, with all the advantages? I do.

And I really really think, from what I know of you, that the same applies to you. Be honest with me. Don't you feel like you got cheated? I do.

I like the ad. Looks nice. Maybe preaching to the choir, but it is a receptive audience anyway.

Cryonics is a form of time travel. Cryonics to many of us cryonicist is viewed as a method to help us achieve immortality, so I think the add is proper. Will it be persuasive and drum up more cryonicist, perhaps not.

You know Kostas, you would think longer life and immortality would be easy to market, but for some reason it is just a hard sell.

I wouldn't mind another shot, even if I got it wrong. :) Cryofan, don't you think even if we make it to the distant future we will still get thing wrong, make mistakes, have problems ect, ect? I'm not expecting the future to be utopia.

The more I see this ad the more I like it. They should sell posters.

I know the ad, and it's understandable it makes people who think scientific raise an eyebrow. But I still like it. I think it's crucial in marketing to appeal to people emotionally.

It's not entirely untrue, either. Just not a direct physical consequence of cryonics. But the more time you have, the more often you can start a new life. It would be nice
to be able do this every few decades or so, without giving up all friends and prior knowledge, of course (this point is perhaps not emphasized by this ad, as you won't
actually start a new life with no past memories).

hehe ^^
it's a nice ad.
I'd rather continue my life and not "relive" them ;) new experienced are better :p

I always found it silly, things that been said here "don't you want to relive your life and get it all right?"
I mean seriously, how can you do things right ^^ and what's the fun in that anyways ! it makes it sound as if you'll be "ready to die" once you got it right ^^
A better idea is to have ever lasting ever changing life, full of wrong and right choices ^^

But that's me getting waayyy to deep into random comments on a forums :p

wish I could even afford to think about cryonics, but considering the current economic crisis rendered me homeless, it's all I can do to hope I live long enough not to need it.

Hah, I thought Vanilla Sky too while viewing it. I think it is misleading, they ran a similar ad in Life Extension magazine. I'd rather it be less whimsical and more science with the clear statement that it is a chance, but a chance many feel is worth taking.
