hello,

i know there are many threads out there discussing similar problems but i would like to mention my specific one, too - since many of them are outdated and research might have brought out better alternatives during the last years.

i am a 23-year-old male student (bodyweight ca. 90 kg) and my problem is that i cannot motivate myself regarding studies (i do not have any other problems - i know what causes this demotivation but nothing i tried helped fighting it during the last nearly 3 years...).
the only thing that will cure me is getting my degree and thus being able to keep on studying elsewhere; but that is rather difficult by not studying (much), although i do like the subject (i am studying cell- and molecular biology).
i am doing sports every day (but saturday) for about 1 - 2 h (very intensive training) and that is the only thing keeping my motivation from falling beneath "0". furthermore i do drink a lot of coffee (i do not take any other drug - i.e. not even alcohol/no smoking), but also 4 - 6 l water a day.

now i would like to try out drugs that might influence my motivation issue favourably; for intense studying purpose (i could get my degree in about 6 / 7 months). which one(s) could do it for me (-> dosage?)? and where could i order them, letting them ship to italy and/or germany?

thank you very much!

ps: since i am studying biology i am interested in further information on the drug's working mechanisms (more specific as they can be found e.g. on wikipedia). so i would be grateful if you could also help me out with some links.

I share your plight. I am also having a terrible time motivating myself to study this semester. In fact, I just took an exam today for which I did not study any. I know I failed it and worse yet, I do not care. This is not good news. When we speak about motivation, we are really talking about dopaminergic action. So it makes sense you start there. If you want to increase motivation, you will want to increase dopamine production or decrease dopamine re-uptake. Also, are you a very social person? Are you introverted or extroverted? How's your blood pressure? What methods/supplements have you tried already?

thank you for your reply and sorry for my late one. i know exactly what you mean by "not caring about" - i took some exams without studying and not even now i am caring about the fact that i did not pass them... indeed, that is making me kind of angry because i never have been this person.

yes, i am very social and usually extroverted. i do not know my blood pressure but it should be excellent for a person at my age. :)

i have not tried any supplements yet, but i tried to motivate myself by spending more time on things i like, e.g. (besides doing sports) listening to music, reading interesting books and establishing deeper contact to my fellow students. the last one might sound strange but i am not studying in my home country; and (as a foreign student) it is very difficult to make friends here - of course i do know many people - since (nearly) everybody is leaving the city where i am studying and going home from thu/fri - sun/mon (what i cannot do). in poor words - i know i am repeating it - besides doing sports i do not have any fun during studies... this made me (after christmas) stay at home for about two months (which i really enjoyed!) and thus i was loosing an entire session of exams. it is clear that i cannot continue doing that and i do have to leave this place; what i only can do by getting my degree.
i also have tried to make me study by schedule - but without any success. not even knowing that i could get my degree in some months and thus continue a "better life" can make me study and as i already said, i do like the subject (of course not everything) i am studying...

modafinil has worked for me and many others. For me the effect is less everyday. I think it is because I get to little sleep when I use it.

Realising that there is only one place where I am an efficient student, the library, has helped me alot.

If I havent used modafinil for a week, then take 200 mg and go to the library for 12 hours it is like spending 30 hours of normal reading. The increased time is because i take no little breaks. I do not ponder over my life. I work. When I do this I usually take a nap at 4-5 o'clock. When I get up after 30 mins its like I have been sleeping for 5 hours. I dont feel anything special, but in the end of the day I have done a lot more than usual.
