Carbon nanotubes have proporties that vary depending on type. One type acts as a conductor, the other acts as a semi-conductor. This gives them the qualities of silicon with a a few extras. The ability to create circuits that can retain their data with no power mixed in with the speed of silicon, so they could be used to make processors which double as their own memory for instant on computers, etc. They also can bond with organic molecules for possible brain/computer interfaces.

They also show promise as a filtration system for various fluids, due to their ability to allow only single molecule flows. Attached to identification enzymes they can be used to selectively filter any type of molecule.

last they are amazingly strong, light and respond to electricity in a variety of ways, from contracting like muscle to their possible use as computers. Sheets of woven nanotubes could create super strong ultralight armor shells for autos, planes, people, etc. It can also form wires and cables whose strength is nearly that of diamond, for use in creating a space elevator.

Wow, this looks like a question for the carbon nanotube thread.....
