I have some exciting news to share with you.
I would like to invite you to join our group's new Facebook cause page at http://apps.facebook.com/causes/295774. Once the SENS Foundation receives 501©(3) status, we will add the SENS Foundation as our cause's beneficiary, and when we reach our cause page's membership goal of 1 million members, members will be able to donate to the SENS Foundation through our cause page. Using a cause page provides the following advantages:
1) Cause pages allow members to track donations -- which will be very important once we reach our membership goal.
2) Cause pages don't have the 5,000 member email limit like groups do -- Facebook does not permit mass emails to groups of over 5,000 members, ONLY those members who have ALSO joined the cause page can be notified by email once we reach our membership goal.
3) Cause pages allow individual donors to voluntarily create a pledge to donate a certain amount of money once an intermediate membership goal is reached. For example, a member could pledge to donate $50 once a membership goal of 2,000 members is reached. The amount of money pledged and the intermediate membership goals are determined entirely by the members that pledge to donate.
Our friend Ben has also set up a cause page for his group "10 thousand people, $1 million to defeat aging" (http://www.facebook....id=101999483139). I invite you to join his cause page as well at http://apps.facebook.com/causes/297361.
Also, one of our members, Braekmans Herman, has suggested a brilliant strategy to help us achieve our goals faster (both for our cause and Ben's cause). The idea is that a member can take friends with them if they want to donate more than $100. For example, if you want to donate $500, you can search for 4 friends whom you want to pay for; they only have to become members of the cause page. If you would like to donate more than $100, this is a great way to help out!
Thanks for your help!
David

For promotional efforts I could mention the groups on the next Sunday evening update and also announce it on my personal facebook, the lifespan twine, and on twitter.

We welcome all promotional efforts for the Facebook causes:
- Help 10,000 people raise $1 million to defeat aging (66 members)
- Help 1 million people raise $100 million to defeat aging (210 members)
We encourage all ImmInst members to join our causes.
I truly believe that we can reach 10k members and raise $1 million before the SENS4 conference (3rd – 7th Sept. 2009) if we all spread the word - ImmInst already has 7,504 members!
Let's make this happen!
Thanks!
David

Thanks a lot Mind.

It's probably a bit confusing with both causes having two, Facebook pages for each goal (a "cause" page and the normal, sign-up page). As regards the 10,000 person goal, it appears the sign-up page has gained a few members (now at 630) and the cause page has lost a few members (now at 66). I assume the sign-up page counts as the official tally?

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for your question. The "cause" page is the official tally - once the cause page reaches its membership goal, all members of the cause page will make their donation. That's why it's very important that all members of the FB groups join the cause pages.
I know this may be a bit confusing, but having a cause page will enable all of us to track donations, which will be very important once we reach our membership goal. Furthermore, as Facebook does not permit mass emails to groups of over 5,000 members, ONLY those members who have joined the cause page can be notified by email once we reach 10 thousand people. In addition, cause pages have other features that can help accelerate our progress toward our membership goal, such as donor matches.
I've been following the growth of both cause pages on a daily basis and I don't think the 10k people cause page has lost any members.

Since the cause page is the official page, would it make sense to send an e-mail to everyone on the "sign-up" page and then close it? That way, you make sure that all traffic is directed to the cause page.
Just a thought.
