I remember reading that white spots on nails is a result of a bad diet. Any info about this? I'm having about 3 white spots on my nails:o

In alternative medicine this is often caused by a condition called Pyroluria, you may have it.

A zinc deficiency has been claimed to caused these white spots apparently.

Its a sign of a zinc deficiency if you have several. If you have one or two white spots you might have banged your nails.

And they are not calcium deposits.

Take some zinc or more zinc and they should go away eventually.

I've got 2 on one hand and 1 on the other hand. I'm getting about 50mg of Zinc everyday isn't that enough?

You might look up symptoms of a zinc deficiency to see if you match others.

If you have high copper levels your body may not be absorbing zinc sufficiently. A 50 mg supplement might be less than 20 mg of elemental zinc depending on the form. If your diet is high in phytates you may not be absorbing all that your ingesting.

what about vertical or horizontal ridges on the nails?

I looked into this a few months ago, and I remember finding that ridges in the same direction as the finger are OK, but ridges perpendicular to the finger are not.

Does that sound right?

I suffer from Pyroluria. My nails don't have white spots but they are very thin. They also have ridges lengthwise.

On another note my wife got a marks on her finger nails during a time of high stress (organising and planning our wedding :) )
