As many Imminst members are aware, a matching grant for anti-aging research was recently approved - involving the study of laser ablation of lipofuscin. This research will be conducted by Nason Schooler at the Institute of Biomedical Gerontology in Tempe Arizona. A promotional effort for the matching grant will be launched soon.

The person conducting the research - Nason Schooler - will be the featured guest on the Sunday Evening Update on June 14th at 6pm eastern (2200 GMT). More details to come.

Ill be there. Is anybody else, any of you reading this going to be rsvp'ing?

Keeping the numbers of viewers in these shows up is one of many important easy ways everybody can help build on the fragile but growing seeds with sprouting or climbing momentums around here.

This will be an excellent show.

Here is some information from Nason's experiments with round worms:

* At visible wavelengths (green), the substrate heated beneath the worms when using convergent beams. The best way to avoid this was putting the worms in M9 buffer on glass for treatment, which worked splendidly.

* Young worms (around day 5) were completely unharmed by single pulses regardless of power level (not to say there wasn't a long-term effect - lifespan assays were not done at the time). However, a single pulse of high power immediately burst older worms. This indicates significant cavitation due to lots of pigment granules in the old worms. This tells us that even the green laser was selectively heating lipofuscin.

* Thus we had a valuable take-home message - lipofuscin can be selectively affected (something we knew already from the literature) and thus treatments on young worms, when granules are small, few and far between is likely to destroy existing granules, not harm the worm, and keep lipofuscin from accumulating (with repeated treatments) - therefore, this is where we plan to start with our lifespan assays once we get the laser set up.

If anybody wants to help advertise the matching grant for this in the Internetworking team then let me know. Its a great reason to get involved with the team. Mind suggests it too. The team is here: http://www.imminst.o...eam-t27351.html

If you want to give to the matching grant yourself then let us know. I think Mind is working on setting up the pay widget now.

Tonight's show will be a great opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Schooler - to find out more about his past experiments and what lies ahead.

If you do plan on attending the show live, remember that Ustream has changed its IRC chat function. Due to incessant spam attacks in the IRC chat, you are now required to register a free Ustream account before being able to chat through the Sunday Evening Update IRC. You can still view and listen to the program live without registering. Registering for a free Ustream account is only required if you would like to participate in the IRC chat.

1 hours 15 minutes until the show. If you are NOT planning on attending live (or if you don't want to register - free- for the Ustream IRC chat) then please list any questions here in the forum and I will ask during the interview.

Wow! Super interview with Nason. He really answered a lot of in depth questions about his past research and of course the future planned research. It is really well worth a listen if you are still unclear about the laser treatment and how it affects lipofuscin and cells. About 40 minutes in length. Very good audio quality. Direct link to the video here.

After talking with Nason, it really affirms my view that at the very least, this research will help us find out something very important about lipofuscin and its relation to aging in worms and human cells.

Thanks Mr. Schooler!
