White House Is Drafting Executive Order to Allow Indefinite Detention of Terror Suspects

The Obama administration, fearing a battle with Congress that could stall plans to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, is drafting an executive order that would reassert presidential authority to incarcerate terrorism suspects indefinitely, according to three senior government officials with knowledge of White House deliberations.

Such an order would embrace claims by former president George W. Bush that certain people can be detained without trial for long periods under the laws of war. Obama advisers are concerned that bypassing Congress could place the president on weaker footing before the courts and anger key supporters, the officials said.

Nice pic! Reality check: Before the election, most of us on the left were pointing out that Obama was a Centrist. It was you guys who were shrieking about him being a "Marxist", "Muslim", etc. So who was naive? I didn't give a nickel to the Obama campaign. How much did you give to the Bush campaign? Ever feel like you wanted your money back? Happy with the three trillion dollar tab for his war of choice? Are your kids and future grandkids happy with it? It's their problem.

Hmm. Seems like most of your democrats voted for that war. That includes our current secretary of state, who now explains she didn't really understand she was voting to go to war when se voted yes. And for the record, I never said Obama was a muslim or a marxist, I really hurled the insults. I said he was a liberal. So did a left-leaning organization, who said he was THE most liberal member of the Senate.

BTW, as it relates to the topic, Obama is acting like no centrist. Based on much of his policy to date, the liberals would have called Obama the N word.

Neocon.

A minority of the Democrats in the House, while virtually all Republicans voted for it. Since the Republicans held majorities in both houses, the AUMF would have passed with no Democrats at all. Some Democrats, particularly those with national political ambitions, voted in a way that I consider cowardly and unprincipled. I imagine a few acted on principle. Their constituents had been lied to by Bush/Cheney, and at the time 70% of them believed that Saddam was directly responsible for 9/11. Congress had been lied to as well. In the face of all the lies, their votes are at least understandable. To call Obama a Neocon is a bit much. I like most of what he's trying to do. Some of it sucks. That's a substantial improvement from Bush, where 99% of it sucked.
