I just saw, tonight, Thursday on Conan that Larry King said he really wants to do cyronics. He told Conan the problem is he doesn't have faith in an afterlife. This is exciting news. However he seemed to be misinformed that cryonics is just the head suspension and not the whole body. He also didn't describe the reviving process that well to the audience. And Conan acted like he was a bit crazy to do so. Conan has always appeared to be a very smart guy who might be open to such ideas. But sadly people are still misinformed on the potential of such things. I'm going to mention maybe we should contact Larry in the VIP projects forum.

Awesome!

Whole-body versus head is really just packaging... But people need to be aware that whole-body exists since many feel like it is like a form of burial and that feels more respectful to them. (And it is the cheapest option if you do it with CI.)

Sounds like he is someone who should definitely be contacted and encouraged... Let's be on our best behavior :)

Definitely! I hate that I get sooo angry and annoyed at ignorance towards science in general especially radical life extension and cryonics. I see it all the time as I'm sure you do too. I guess religious opposition to somethings that aren't hurting their precious religion really get to me. Oh cryonics is doing the work of the devil and other such hogwash. Never understood how people can just go on "faith" alone which, imo, is just wishful thinking and therefore silly.

This is awesome! Is there a video of his conversion anywhere, or a transcript of their dialogue?

We should definitely put Larry on the VIP list.

One idea is to even ask Alcor to send him one of those free membership kits (with the video, paper work, etc).

Maybe if one of us went to NBC.com site there would be a recast of last nights show. I've been arguing cryonics with mostly imbeciles all day who will find any rationalization just to look at it as a bad thing. unethical, a sin, irresponsible, just wrong, we only should have one shot at life, unfair to those who can't afford it. Truth is if more people did it than price would go way down.

Here is the NBC link to Larry King on Conan.

He starts the cryonics talk about halfway through the video.

And Conan acted like he was a bit crazy to do so. Conan has always appeared to be a very smart guy who might be open to such ideas. But sadly people are still misinformed on the potential of such things.

It's difficult to truly guage Conan's real thoughts on the topic, as it's his job to make light of anything unusual that crops up in an interview, in order to entertain the audience. Who knows what he really thinks.

At least the audience didn't boo, or go into stunned silence. Which, with an unpopular topic like cryonics, could've easily happened. Especially when Larry brought up Ted Williams, and decapitation.

I looked at CI's FAQ sheet and they even mention in that sheet that Larry King was going to do it or at least was enthusiastic about it. And who knows when that was last updated? The last thing I, and many others have heard, is that Paris Hilton wanted to buy shares in CI. But is it Ben Best? Well he said that people can't even do that thus maybe she was joking. But maybe not. Time will tell.

WOW!!!

Just watched the video and I'm thrilled that Larry King is such an immortalist/transhumanist!

Quick .. someone record that and distribute it on youtube and across the internet ... this is fantastic publicity!

Yeah it's hella cool! But king didn't explain it very well to Conan or the public which leads me to think he's a noobie and doesn't know to much about it, or he just gave a quick explanation.

Thank you for adding the link! I watched it just now--and this is what cryonics needs, someone who is down to earth, respected and funny. Yes, it appears Larry King has not talked to anyone about Cryonics at Alcor or CI, as he'd know why one would choose for a neuro suspension (better preservation of the brain, due to being able to use major arteries into the brain for the profusion of vitrification/preservation formulas). Devon, if anyone, you should send a package to Larry King with books, a brief cover letter if any. I'm fine with you using the below, and enclosing those books--you can send from your address but include my contact info--my email shannonvyff at yahoo dot com, as well as my phone/address.

Dear Larry King,

I saw your interview with Conan O'Brian and heard of your interest in Cryonics. I've enclosed some books on the subject and the contact information for the various organizations.

Enclosed:

1. The Scientific Conquest of Death, (an overview of many issues surrounding the topic of conquering death)
2. 21st Century Kids, (written to explain cryonics to kids, sort of like Daddy Day, Daughter Day was written to help with pain of divorce)
3. Ending Aging, (what is being done to end aging and how it most likely can be accomplished)
4. The Prospect of Immortality, (a classic introduction to cryonics)

There is a lot of information at the Cryonics Institute website and Alcor website. http://www.cryonics.org/refs.html and http://www.alcor.org/

Feel free to contact me with any questions, I'm the mother of three children who are signed up for cryonics. You can see me interviewed by Barbara Walters by typing "Freezing Yourself Into the Future" at the ABC news site.

Best of luck with all, and your own trip into the future :-)

Shannon Vyff

Larry King talking about cryonics is a good step in the right publicity direction. Just last week on the Sunday Evening Update, Dr. Brian Wowk said the publicity cryonics needed was from famous people who were not merely entertainers but famous for leadership/science/activism what-not. Larry King is not too bad.

I get frustrated and annoyed by ignorance about this stuff too. But I get equally frustrated by the communities kneejerk antagonism toward religion. How did a conversation about Larry King's enthusiasm for cryonics suddenly turn into a condescending rant against religious people? This stuff has become the convenient position for life extensionists to take every time something frustrates them - in this case the response of Conan Obrien who has not indicated that he is religious as far as I know. It's not good.

interesting video clip.

Sometimes it seems that celebrities use cryonics to get more publicity, but King seems sincere here. His statement that his family rules him in death AND life had the ring of truth, as did his statement about wanting to live and enjoying. He is sincere about it.

He would be a great boon for cryonics, but it looks like he hardly knows anything about it. That is not taht unusual for many pre-cryos because learning more about it takes some courage because you really have to face death to learn about it.

He sounds like a good prospect but he is too afraid right now to really get his hands dirty and learn enough about it to sign up. There are probably thousands and thousands of people who have gotten to this stage and never signed up.

MOST pre-cryos never make it past this stage. They never sign up and then usually die without cryopreservation.

Some of us (not affiliated with a cryo org) should definitely contact king and give him some info and give him the url for this forum and cryonet and tell him he can come on here anonymously and ask questions.

This is the real power of cryonics community. If he can communicate with others who have this same mindset, it may propel him to the next level.

I think he'd better hurry up and sign up for cryonics if he's serious - I gather he's 75,
used to smoke three packs a day and has had open-heart surgery, so I'd assume his
imminent demise has been on his mind on more than one occasion. As he points out,
it's better to have SOME chance of coming back versus NONE, especially in a (hopefully)
rejuvenated, super-athletic body.

How do you know he hasn't signed up? Do you know for sure?

Well he didn't say he did (unless if it's mentioned in his book), and his lack of knowledge of it (thinking it's only the head) suggests he may not have talked to a cryonics provider.

Plus didn't Shannon in a previous post mention that her contacts in CI and Alcor say that they have not heard from Larry King.

Anyway, if he hasn't signed up Imminst should send him a cryonics package as soon as possible!!! :D

Shannon, me, and Eric are in charge of this. Shannon has ordered the books, or is ordering in the next few days, and the package should be sent very soon.

What about Hugh Hefner? I've heard his health is failing him and his time is relatively short. And finally, was the Larry King package mailed out?

Hefner should be a good one - after all he's surrounded by a lot of good reasons to
want to get rejuvenated ;)

Larry King in his latest book says "Being frozen is a good way to go because maybe it's
a good way not to go." Maybe Alcor et al. could make that into a jingle? :)

Good idea. Do you know how to use video and audio editors at all? If you do, maybe you could try one. Either that or, if you want, that would make a good suggestion to add to the art team. You can find the art team sub forum in the action section.

Hefner, and Kaku and those are good suggestions, although some mid level VIP's would be even better if anybody can think of more good examples of those. They would be easier to get through to, yet still retain enough popularity to help draw people in and gain attention.

Hefner's also an atheist I read! Maybe we should contact him?
