All:

First: this IS the right forum in which to raise such stuff, right?

- I'm running into a very annoying problem with the quote function: when I try to edit previously-posted posts that have quotes embedded in them already, the Boards insists that the quote-unquotes don't add up, even when I haven't added or subtracted any. I've even tried editing a post by just hitting 'edit' and then 'complete edit,' with no changes made -- it still insists they don't match, even tho' they did in the first place.

-Is there really no way to make the darned Announcement and Meet&Greet boxes go awaay? The toggle that's supposed to open and close it originally did so, but now switches you from a large annoying box to an even larger annoying box!

Thanks!

-Michael

This would be the best place to raise technical issues. I'll move your question there.

Thanks for pointing out these issues Michael. There is a new quote mod installed and perhaps it is having trouble, particularly with large quotes. I am sure Caliban will look into it soon.

As far as the chat box goes, it still closes and opens in my browser. We will have to test it in different browsers.

You might want to try clicking on the Posted Image button.

Clicking on meet&greet gives you a large window, the button should make it disappear.

My guess:
Multiple quote embedding can cause some browsers to hang or crash.
Hence we have set the Max. "Number Quotes Per Post" to 5.
When you are editing an old post that was not created under this rule, you could get an error.
I have set the limit to 12 now, hopefully that won't create any problems.

The toggle is the (-) sign, Posted Image / Posted Image and NOT the text. Alternatively, you can click on 'my prefs' and disable the box altogether.

I just tried this out, apparently the "My Prefs" button is currently not working, but instead just makes the shout box go full screen.

First, it's not telling me that I've exceeded the excess-quoting rule (I've run into that before, too, and am delighted that it's been at least somewhat relaxed, tho' I'd really rather it was gone ...), but that the quotes don't match up. Also, it's happening in posts still now, and WAS and still IS happening even in posts that had <5 quotes such as here and here.

Michael asks, Is there really no way to make the darned Announcement and Meet&Greet boxes go awaay? The toggle that's supposed to open and close it originally did so, but now switches you from a large annoying box to an even larger annoying box!

I understood that, but it wasn't working (for me). Just now, it IS working (yay!).

Caliban further suggests: Alternatively, you can click on 'my prefs' and disable the box altogether.

Sorry: where is 'my prefs'/'my preferences' ...?

Thanks!

It is happening to me when I am quoting a person specifically vs. just the quote tags.

I remove the specific name and time, making them generic quotes, then it lets me post.

For me, the quotes sometimes quote in whole, sometimes they are automatically cut off and given a "..." and I think ever time, it automatically only quotes the last persons quote, and not the quote that those quotes were in response to.

The My Prefs button is there under the box where you type for the chat. Its next to "Shout", "Clear", and "Refresh" Its called, "My Prefs". When you click that it makes the chat bigger, but also gives you a pop up box that gives you a variety of options. One of those options allows you to dissable the shout box for you on all forum pages, as far as I know that is permanent. You have to then do some finangling to get the box to come back, so if you dont do that finangling you should never see the shout box again.

OK, I don't have any of those buttons -- see the attached.

The quote bug is still rearing its ugly head. I replied to a post, thus having one set of quotes for the text in the post. I added some text of my own, then pasted in an abstract which I wrapped in quote tags. The system bungled it, duplicating my text and the abstract. I tried to edit the post, but cleaning it up in the editor just led to a further bungle, shown here. This is probably a case of pointers or similar indices getting lost or stepped on. It's not due to excessive quote tags, since there were only two in total. Is this a problem caused by the quote limit? If so, it really needs to be larger.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was able to replicate the bug but have no immediate idea how to fix it and no time to work on it.
Thus I have lifted the quote restriction entirely.

That means that the problem with overly long, multiple embedded quotes is still with us. (example). We will need to rely on users using common sense and on Navigators enforcing it.

Have we throttled back on the allowable number of quotes again? I just had a bit of frustration here, at just four quotes, and even five is often an unreasonably limited amount of inline response.

overly long, multiple embedded quotes is a problem of generic clutter, not of the number of quotes in a post per se.
