I developed what I believe to be a tooth infection about a month ago, I made an appointment to get it taken care of but had to cancel for certain reasons, I just made another appointment for a week from now. The symptoms are not pain or abscess but extremely sensitivity to cold and heat. I know we are not suppose to keep these things untreated for too long but what is the maximum time we should wait? Should I go to the emergency room? As I said it does not hurt, just extreme sensitivity when I eat or drink something.

If you are not running a fever or experiencing pain, you can try and wait for the appointment. If pain keeps you from sleeping or you start running a fever, you should call and tell them you need to move it forward. The danger is infection of the blood.

I had one for 6 months, though i had antibiotics and root canal, infection came back within a few days and the dentist kept saying it wasn't an infection for 6 months... lol. Got the tooth out and it wasn't pretty :-) I had a low grade fever of 37.2 degree C compared to my normal temp of 36.0 during the time.

Acute infectiosn are dangerous though and should be treated right away. Might be a crack or something in the tooth...
