While researching what foods to avoid while taking a MAOI's I came across this:

<li>Avoid liquid and powdered protein dietary supplements (Anon, 1989).

I use Protein shakes 2-3 times per day. If I'm taking under 10mg of Depreynl per week do I really need to be concerned with tyramine containing foods?

No, you don't have to worry about it. If you start taking 10mg a day (probably not a good idea without your doctor's advice) you might want to limit it though.

Read "clinical pharmacology":

I would avoid OTC cough and cold medication.

There are no dietary restrictions at mao-b dosages, especially with 1.25mg.

Yes but you don't want to go down several grams of Tyrosine, that's a recipe for a hypertensive crisis. It shouldn't matter though, most protein supplements have ~1g of tyrosine per 100g at the most.

I take Moclobemide everyday (Reversible MAOI)
And i have about 3 Whey protein shakes a day and im fine.

Also with Deprenyl you shouldnt worry about hypertensive crysis, most people who say this are just assuming. (only worry about it if ur taking 1gram + PEA at a time)
I have taken Large doses of tyrosine, amphetamine, modafinil, meth, mdma all on deprenyl... and if anything deprenyl reduced any cardiovascular effect. and saying that there is also a study about it too.

also saying that, i have monitored my BP with the combination above with maybe max of 5-10 above baseline in diastolic and systolic blood pressure.

I wouldn't avoid them. When taking deprenyl I often take 500mg DLPA plus one or two protein shakes a day often. I really don't notice much from the protein, and I am very sensitive to all stimulants.

However I would strongly avoid PEA, and watch out for any cold medication, or anything that contains and dopamine rececptor agonists.

I took a single contact C day time relief for a cold that I had while on deprenyl and I had a major hypertensive crysis. My heart rate was up like crazy. I did 700 laps around my apartment counting everyone, this had a strong calming effect. It was probably one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. And I was taking very low dose deprenyl. 0.5mg liquid a day max. However this was subligual administration so I'd estimate that it was probably 2-3mg oral equivalent.

Recently I've decided to quit the deprenyl. It just wastn't worth it risking another experience like that, aditionally it did raise my heart rate slightly all the time, or maybe it just make more more aware of it???

***As the above post hints not everyone reacts in the same manner to everything. I'd advise that you just be very careful when mixxing drugs with any MAOI inhibitors.

Plus it's not much of a noot anyways, more of a lifesyle, drive, confidence boosting drug.

I understand that actual stimulants (amphetamine, ephedrine, synephrine, etc) or other completed psychoactive drugs like those in cold medicines and so forth are usually broken down by mao, so hypotension is understandable in those cases.

HOWEVER: How would mao-b inhibitor impact tyrosine and cause high blood pressure? Are you saying the body would reflexively convert the tyrosine to large amounts of NE (=Norepinephrine =Adrenaline)? And that, what, normally adrenaline is broken down/limited by mao-b? (is it?) So your adrenaline levels would skyrocket giving you high blood pressure? (does adrenaline do that?) Or would the problem be caused by Dopamine that tyrosine also gets converted into and that mao-b normally keeps in check? (does it?) I am not sure I ever heard of these particular mechanics before, but I am just a self-educated random biochem amateur, eager to fill gaps in my knowledge.... so please, educate us!

I am not nay-saying you, and indeed, it does seem like a sensible precaution, and an EXCESS of precaution is always in order when dealing with mao inhibitors of any kind, but I would just like to learn details about the precise Unfortunate Series Of Events (to reference the popular macabre children's books and film ;-) involved here.

Thanks!
